Buch
Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Original publisher's white paper wrappers with string binding. Brown lettering and color illustration of an elk on front cover. 6" x 8." Unpaginated, eight pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning, a few small wrinkles, and slight offsetting from the printed text. Covers are very clean and intact except for light age toning, slight wear to extremities, and a few wrinkles. A Very Good copy. This is a pamphlet that was published on the occasion of a memorial service for members of Stockton Lodge No. 218 who have passed. The text on verso of title page features an "In Memoriam" list in two columns with over seventy names in total. The following page lists the names of officers of the lodge with their accompanying titles, trustees, and "past exalted rulers." The program of the memorial service then follows which briefly lists the "order of exercises," among which are orchestral songs, opening and closing ceremonies of "Lodge of Sorrow," a prayer, vocal solos, a eulogy, an address by Brother F. J. Murasky of San Francisco Lodge No. 3, doxology, and benediction. There are a couple of brief extracts from poems or songs as well. The last page lists names of the Memorial Committee. Stockton Lodge No. 218 is one of the lodges that is part of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE, also known as Elks Lodge or simply, The Elks), an American fraternal organization that was founded in 1868 in New York City. BPOE was originally a social club for minstrel performers but transitioned to a fraternal organization following the death of one of the club's members resulting from a physical ailment and lack of funds for his treatment. By 1890, BPOE had 173 lodges in the United States. BPOE has several requirements for membership including, among others, being a certain age and willingness to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, salute the American flag, and adhering to U.S. laws and the Constitution. BPOE originally had more rites and traditions based on those of the Freemasons but discarded many of them in order to establish its own identity. Currently, BPOE maintains its social aspect but also has charitable programs such as those supporting youth and veterans. BPOE and Stockton Lodge No. 218 are still active to this day. Stockton Lodge No. 218 was originally located at Weber and Sutter Streets but moved to its current location on Thornton Road in 1974. As of 2020, BPOE claims it has over 750,000 members. BPOE has had controversy throughout its history due to its exclusion of African Americans, Italian and Jewish people, and women, among others, from membership, but by 1973, BPOE removed the discriminatory clause in its national constitution excluding non-white men from being members, and women were later allowed to join following a vote in July 1995.

Staplebound. Zustand: Near fine. Quarto. 24pp.; 26pp. [18]pp., illustrated. All volumes near fine, with mild flattened creases, else clean and sharp. Three souvenir booklets, for the 48th, 52nd, and 53rd annual conventions of the New England States and Eastern Canada Association of Elk Lodges--both the fraternal organization and its female auxiliary. These conventions were held in Providence, Hartford, and again in Providence, respectively. The booklets are filled with portrait illustrations of various bigwigs in the IBOPEW (both national and regional figures), as well as programming information, and a number of local advertisements geared toward convention-goers. The IBPOEW is the largest extant fraternal organization founded by African-Americans. Founded in 1897, it still maintains a membership of around half a million members. According to historian Venus Green, the Improved Elks labor activism was distinguished from other black fraternal organizations by their "cross-class alliances, male/female solidarity, racial unity, a willingness to join coalitions across ideologies and to engage in multiple forms of struggle, especially militant mass mobilization." (Venus Green, "Not your average fraternal organization: the IBPOEW and labor activism, 1935-1950", Labor History, Volume 53, 2012 - Issue 4, pp.471-494, Taylor and Francis Online; accessed 17 May 2017). These booklets paint a picture of an organization in flux in the immediate wake of the Civil Rights Movement, after which other fraternal organizations had opened their doors to African-Americans, and much of the structures of segregation were being dismantled. Naturally ephemeral, we found no separate holdings of any convention booklets for this chapter in OCLC, nor in commerce as of this listing.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. (178) unnumbered pages. Softcover in original wrapper. 28 cm. Minor cover soil. A few pages about the program, etc. but most of the content is congratulatory adertisements by individuals, businesses and local chapters. We found no listing for anything by the Purple Cross Nurses in OCLC but did locate a listing for a copy of this program at the Library of Virginia in an archive of material from a local chapter of the I. B. P. O. E. of W. We don't know exactly what the Health Department and the Purple Cross Nurses did or what training the Purple Cross Nurses may have had. A minority of the women pictured in this volume are wearing traditional nurses' uniform. The printed welcome from the Grand Directress of the Purple Cross Nurses identifies this at their seventh [annual] program with the first being held in 1965.

Vintage Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World (IBPOEW) sign, with the traditional Benevolent Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) elk's head and "Eleven O'clock Toast" depicted, and with "Copyright by Geo. E. Jessup 1934 A.D." printed in small text above the decorative border on the lower left. The IBPOEW., an African American fraternal order modeled after the BPOE, was established by B.F. Howard and Arthur J. Riggs in Cincinnati in 1897, after being refused admission to the BPOE because of race. Claiming descent from the Free African Society, the first formal Black society in the US, founded in Philadelphia in 1787 by Absalom Jones and Richard Adams, the IBPOEW held their first meeting on November 17, 1898. During the 1930s and 1940s, the IBPOEW became increasingly involved in labor activism for Black Americans, "resisting union exclusion, workplace segregation, and unemployment," and distinguishing themselves from other Black fraternal organizations by "cross-class alliances, male/female solidarity, racial unity, [and] a willingness to join coalitions across ideologies and to engage in multiple forms of struggle, especially militant mass mobilization," according to historian Venus Green. Today, the organization holds over a half a million members and 1500 lodges worldwide. The BPOE opened admission to African Americans and other minorities in 1972. 13.5 x 10.5 inches, black ink on gold cardstock. Very Good plus with faint creasing, and light rubbing and soiling overall.
