Includes Preliminary Page Quotes; Author Dedication; Preface; Foreword; Prologue; Epilogue; Appendix I: Maps and D…ocuments; Appendix II: Photographs; and Index. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs and diagrams. ". a brutally honest book . Gordon takes an unflinching and unsparing look at the human toll exacted by captivity, slave labor, starvation, and torture." -- Gavan Daws, author. " . a poignant, honest account of a tragic experience unique in the annals of American military history. It is also a sad commentary on the depths to which men may sink when confronted with unimaginable horrors and privations." - Stanley L. Falk, Ph.D., former chief historian, U.S. Air Force and author. "Few know of the failure of U.S. military leadership to prepare its Philippine defenders for war and to protect them from the horrors that ensued in captivity . I can't tell you how often I found myself measuring my own conduct and example as a senior American military officer in command in the light of this book." - Captain David C. Taylor, Commanding Officer, USS Bataan (LHD-5). "When reading Gordon's descriptions of POW camp life, one remembers James Clavell's powerful POW novel King Rat and Gavan Daws' historical masterpiece Prisoners of the Japanese. Gordon pulls few punches about his wartime trauma as a POW." - Scott Harrison, State Department Career diplomat and military historian. "Richard Gordon recalls and desribes those endless days and nights of the military action and the almost three and a half years of both being despised by the Japanese and victimized by fellow Americans and other prisoners . This is a true and unexaggerated account of what it means to be a horyo." - John Browe, Survivor of Camp O'Donnell, Camp Cabanatuan, and Camp 4-R. "This is the vivid account of Richard M. Gordon, who grew up in "Hell's Kitchen" in New York City, and in August 1940 enlisted in the Army and was assigned to duty in the Philippines. He attained the rank of sergeant during combat in Bataan. In April 1942, he was captured by the Japanese and forced to participate in the infamous Bataan Death March, and subsequently held prisoner of war in several camps including O'Donnell, Cabanatuan, and Hiraoka on Mitsushima in Japan. At O'Donnell and Cabanatuan he was assigned to burial detail until malaria compelled him to join a group of POWs who were shipped to Japan as laborers in November 1942. In shocking detail, he describes life and death in these camps and forces the reader to confront the predatory behavior of many soldiers in such circumstances. En route to Japan, his ship, Nagato Maru, survived an American torpedo attack. During the trip, thirteen prisoners died due to the poor conditions aboard ship. Upon arrival, Gordon was sent, along with 100 POWs, to Camp Hiraoka, where they were forced to work as slave laborers, in appalling living conditions, on the construction of a hydroelectric dam. He remained in Hiraoka until its liberation on September 4, 1945. During that period, 48 American and British POWs died in Hiraoka. After the war, he testified at the war crimes trial after which six of his Japanese guards, including the first commander from Hiraoka, were hanged." -- from the inner front jacket flap. Orman, Larry (jacket design) (illustrator).
