En route to Japan, his ship, Nagato Maru, survived an American torpedo attack. During the trip, thirteen prisoners died due to the poor conditions aboard ship. Upon arrival, Gordon was sent, along with 100 POWs, to Camp Hiraoka, where they were forced to work as slave laborers, in appalling living conditions, on the construction of a hydroelectric dam. He remained in Hiraoka until its liberation on September 4, 1945. During that period, 48 American and British POWs died in Hiraoka.
