Contains numerous illustrations by G.and R. Cruikshank and a small section on archery. A marksman and inventor with an 'inclination to self-publicity and aggrandisement' (Credland), Charles Random de Berenger (1772?1845) in 1830 established 'the Stadium' or 'British National Arena' at Chelsea, where he encouraged 'manly and defensive exercises, equestrian, chivalric and aquatic games, and skilful and amusing pastimes', as detailed (or rather advertised) in the present volume. The Baron de Berenger's memory is marred, however, by his involvement in a fraud of the stock exchange in 1814, in which he artificially raised the value of Government stocks by falsely reporting the death of Napoleon. In den Warenkorb28pp, [4]. With a half-title and 11 plates and plans, three of which folding, and a printed notice advertising 'sacrifices and alterations from the terms, amusements & regulations' tipped to the inside of the upper wrapper. Original publisher's buff paper wrappers. Some loss to spine, slight marking, but generally a well preserved example. Early ownership inscription of 'Mary Wright Bought this Book at Chelsea on the 21st of July 1838' to inside of upper wrapper. An apparently unrecorded issue, in original unsophisticated state, of the scarce introductory brochure and guide to the Stadium, a pioneering metropolitan sports club set up at Chelsea Farm in 1831 by convicted stock-market fraudster Charles Random, Baron de Berenger. The contents and fine engravings by the brothers Cruikshank details the decidedly martial athletic opportunities available at the National Sporting Club, which included rifle shooting, archery and equitation. The final section also promotes the opportunity to buy a shareholding of the venture, which was ultimately unsuccessful; the only lasting impact on the surrounding area is recognised by the still extant Stadium Street. Originally issued in 1834, in 36pp and featuring 7 plates, the text was also incorporated as pp[247-274] of Berenger's popular Helps and hints how to protect life and property (London, 1835). This separate 1835 edition - with 11 plates - however, appears unrecorded in the usual databases. The four additional plates consist of two landscape scenes, and two plans of the site, three of which did feature in Helps and hints. c/f Cohn 772. Size: 8vo.

Good binding and cover, with minor edge wear. 604 pages, [4] ads; 26 cm. Includes folding plate. Old institutional book plate. Goldsmiths' 21014. An account of the trial of Charles Random de Berenger, Sir Thomas Cochrane, and others for their conspiracy to defraud the price of government securities. After spreading false information of Napoleon's death and causing bond prices to rise, Berenger and his co-conspirators sold more than a million pounds of government bonds at a tidy profit. Once news of Napoleon's death was found to be a hoax, bond prices plummeted. Investigators quickly discovered the conspiracy and the six men were arrested and tried. Berenger, and Cochrane, a British MP and Admiral, was expelled from the Order of Bath, jailed and fined, and ordered to stand for one hour in the pillory in front of the Royal Exchange. The events became known as the Great Stock Exchange Fraud of 1814. Lord Cochrane maintained his innocence throughout the episode and was eventually pardoned in 1832, impart because popular opinion had sided with the naval war hero. The evidence appears to show that Cochrane had intimate knowledge of the scheme.

In den Warenkorbhardcover. Zustand: very good. London, for the Proprietor by Hurst 1835. Octavo publisher's green grained cloth (rebacked with the original spine preserved); viii,286,[2]pp, two folding lithograph views, eight etched plates by George or Robert Cruikshank, wood engravings through the text. A leaf torn without loss, a little browning of the lithographs, the rebacking perhaps a bit thorough but a rather good copy in a modern cloth slipcase. How not to leave a bank; how to deal with footpads, whether on foot or in a carriage; and countless other useful tips on how to survive in London, on the highway and in the country (''eject out of a room, how to, anyone with certainty'' surely works in town or country). The last 30 some pages, which includes the etchings and lithographs, is an advertisement for de Berenger's Stadium, or British National Arena which covered 24 acres of Chelsea. The Baron de Berenger, or Charles Random, who has been described variously as an inventor, sharpshooter, print colourer and stockmarket fraud, set up his Stadium in 1831 and held modern Olympics there in 1832 and 1838. He certainly had no claim to the rank of Lt. Colonel but there is some uncertainty about his claim to his title; it may have some validity. The Cruikshank brothers seem to have had a closer relationship with Berenger than mere hired illustrators: Arthur G. Credland, in an article on Berenger in 'Arms & Armour' (2006), speculates that through their keen interest in archery and shooting that one, or both of them, taught at the Stadium and he recounts a less than illustrious heritage for Berenger transmitted via the Cruikshanks.

In den WarenkorbF is for Fraudster Engraved trade card. The Random of "Random & Stainbank" was none other than infamous stock-market rigger, the mysterious "Colonel de Bourg", who arrived late at night on the 20th of February 1814, fresh off a boat from Calais, with the (fake) longed-for news that Napoleon was dead. When the Stock Exchange opened the next morning, Government bond prices when through the roof, and de Bourg and his co-conspirators began to sell off thousands of pounds worth of Omnium bonds that they had invested in only the week before. Augustus Charles Random de Berenger, born plain Charles Random, married a wealthy Prussian baroness, and so adopted her title as his own. Before he hit upon the idea of stock market fraud as a way to make a living, he worked as a colourist at Rudolph Ackermann's establishment in the Strand, and then with Christopher Stainbank in Bond Street, as here. He had been a legitimate soldier, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, but also a convicted debtor held under house arrest by the 'Rules of the King's Bench'. He was tried and convicted for his part in the Stock exchange fraud, and upon his release, and with a large inheritance, he bought a substantial property in Chelsea, from which he operated a gymnasium, and published a book on self- and home defence. Engraved by Bateman, probably J. Batemen who operated from premises in the Strand in the early 1800s See BM D 2.3448 for a stipple engraved trade card for the same firm.

Gurney's is the most detailed account of one of the greatest English fraud cases of the nineteenth century. In 1814 Berenger, a Prussian aristocrat posing as an aide to Britain's ambassador to Russia, announced that Napoleon had been killed by Russian Cossacks. This news caused stock prices to rise. After discovering that Berenger's news was a hoax, which caused prices to drop, investigators discovered that six men had profited substantially from the false information. All were alleged to have been conspirators with Berenger. One of these men was Cochrane, a Member of Parliament, an admiral and one of the greatest naval heroes of the Napoleonic Wars. The case against him was weak and circumstantial, but he was, to the surprise of many, convicted, sentenced to 12 months in prison, fined ?1,000. and ordered to stand in the pillory opposite the Royal Exchange for one hour. In subsequent weeks, he was dismissed from the Royal Navy and expelled from Parliament. On the orders of the Prince Regent, Cochrane was humiliated by the loss of his appointment Knight of the Order of the Bath.
