This extension, called the geometrical theory of diffraction, incorporates certain additional rays called diffracted rays and complex or imaginary rays into the analysis of wave propagation in inhomogeneous media. The diffracted rays are associated with boundaries or discontinuities of the medium, while the latter are associated with refraction shadows that occur in the absence of boundaries.
