This book analyzes the use of "iubeo" in classical Latin when authors used it in commands, in particular the instances where they did not use the expected infinitive construction, instead using either a subjunctive, an active or passive periphrastic infinitive, or a simple subjunctive construction. The author has analyzed over 400 such constructions, across over 3000 examples involving the infinitive. The majority of these examples exhibit precisely the "iubeo-infinitive" structure, but this book focuses on exceptions to this common construction, which the author argues may be intentional for the purposes of emphasis or literary effect, rather than the result of authorial carelessness, as has been traditionally assumed. Instead, these variations are considered within the context of their placement within the narrative, as well as the broader conventions of Latin literature and grammar as used by these authors. This book will appeal to scholars and advanced students of Latin, as well as those interested in classical literature and grammar. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

This book is an extensive examination of Alabama's history and present-day standing as a U.S. state, with a focus on historical events, prominent figures, legal cases, and economic developments that have shaped the state over time. Within the broader history of the Deep South, the author provides local context for national events and policies. A prominent theme of this book is tracing the evolution of law and order in Alabama from early territorial days to present-day legal issues, placing controversies in historical and political contexts. The author also provides a wealth of Alabama-specific data, from numeric details on population growth and industrial productivity to specific examples of legal cases and constitutional amendments that have impacted the state. Though the author avoids overt opinion or bias, the text promotes familiarity with Alabama's people and places to help Alabamians fully understand their shared heritage.
