Howard established that Conan eventually became king of Aquilonia, but he never wrote the sustained narrative of the rebellion and conquest that brought him to the throne. In Howard's chronology, the transition is largely retrospective: Conan killed Numedides and took his crown. De Camp and Carter turned that unexplored episode into a full novel, making Conan the Liberator an important piece of the expanded Conan chronology. The story connects Conan's earlier career as adventurer, mercenary, and outlaw with the king encountered in Howard's later tales.
