First edition hard back binding in publisher's original cerise cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine, burgundy end paper maps. 8vo. 9'' x 6''. Contains 528 printed pages of text with archive monochrome illustrations on coated art paper throughout, one other full page map. Eugène de Beauharnais was born in Paris, and became the stepson and adopted child (but not the heir to the imperial throne) of Napoleon I. His biological father was executed during the revolutionary Reign of Terror. He commanded the Army of Italy and was Viceroy of Italy under his stepfather. Historians consider him one of the ablest of Napoleon's relatives. Light stain to the fore edges of the book, contents not affected. Very Good condition book in Very Good condition dust wrapper with short closed tear to the bottom of the spine, not price clipped 50s.
