Soft cover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. This book is in good condition. The cover is stained and there are corner knocks, but there no tears and it is tightly bound, looks never read. This book is a collection of short stories by 5 authors translated by Bowles from Arabic. With the exception of material by Choukri, all these tales were a mater first of listening to the story and then turning it quickly into its nearest equivalent in English. Bowles started recording theYacoubi's stories in 1952 by hand and later by tape recorder. Layachi's stories illustrate his theme of suffering and injustice. The unmistakable of Moroccan life pervades all the stories. Proceeds from the sale of this book benefit environmental restoration and education.

First Edition. First edition. 145, [2] pp. Bound in publisher's illustrated boards with red cloth backstrip, paper title label. Fine in original acetate wrapper, slightly cloudy. A collection of stories by five Moroccan authors, all except Choukri's being spoken texts only. American novelist and composer Paul Bowles transcribed them, his writing talents coming in handy to create a very different sort of short story than American readers are typically used to: very unpretentious and oddly entrancing. Mrabet, Choukri, and Layachi (initially writing as Driss Ben Hamed Charhadi) all wrote a number of books, most translated by Bowles.
