From the edition limited to 166 numbered copies, with this one of 30 édition de tête copies on papier chiffon du Moulin de Larroque, signed by the author (colophon page) and the artist (paintings). What if art were to exist beyond the canvas stretched upon its frame? This is the boundary André Valensi chooses to elude by exploring alternative supports for his work. The artist finds his place within the Supports/Surfaces movement, whose approach is grounded in a radical questioning of artistic practice as a whole. The artwork is no longer confined to the painting, to the finished object; it extends to an entire process encompassing materials, supports, and gestures. No longer concerned with representing a subject or an idea, no longer decorative, art is laid bare. In the same spirit, Valensi emerges as an idealist in search of a pictorial absolute, one that allows the very components of the work to exist on equal terms with the process itself, without intro-ducing the representation of any external idea. From the edition limited to 140 copies. One of the first 20 copies numbered on papier chiffon du Moulin de Larroque. A singular artist of the French contemporary scene, André-Pierre Arnal joined the Supports/Surfaces group in 1971. Among the actors of this movement with strong political convictions, the use of loose canvas, rejection of the brush, and the banality of materials are all means to make visible and perceptible the way the canvas is created. This nakedness of the work corresponds with the desire to make art accessible to all, to occupy democratic public space.
