Plate from John Augustus Atkinson's (1775 - 1831) 'A Picturesque Representation of the Manners, Customs and Amusements of the Russians', 1803 - 1804. Hand coloured soft ground etching and aquatint with very large margins. Green bevel cut mount. Mount window 190 x 253 mm; overall size of mount 340 x 405 mm. John Augustus Atkinson was a British etcher, painter, draughtsman and printmaker. He spent 1784 - 1801 in Russia with his uncle, James Walker. After returning to London in 1801, he made prints after his works, of Russian subjects, and made outline etchings for other artists. He also executed paintings on military subjects and battles. 34 x 40.5 overall cm. Note the shading in the right margin. This is rippling of the paper from the damp stained outer margin hidden beneath the mount. The paper is also slightly toned.

With sixty-four engraved plates, most with accompanying descriptive letterpress. Good early impressions of a fine collection of plates, complete as they stand. The three volumes would appear to have been bound up very soon after they were issued and so do not incorporate any plates published subsequently. 'In little estimation except the impressions be good' - Lowndes. The Angus contains 40 plates only of 63, although the remaining plates would appear to have been issued subsequently to 1787. Watts' Bath and Bristol contains 12 plates, of Bath only, dated 1794 although Abbey's copy was a later issue calling for 15 plates with the date 1819. The descriptive letter press is absent. Griffith's Wales also contains 12 plates, (dated 1792) without the 4 plates issued subsequently in 1795. (192*266 mm). (ESTC T145837. N28006).

Overall a Very Good+ copy of a very scarce title, remarquable for the quantity and quality of its photographic illustrations.

Each volume housed in a brown fabric slipcase. Boards pristine. Light off-setting, foxing, tanning and finger staining throughout. Volume 1 with printed dedication to George III and the Earl of Oxford. Frontispiece Tamesis ("Father Thames") sculpted by J. Parker after the originals by M. Damer. Vol. I, page 171, extra plate from another Boydell work. Vol II, page 246 plate repaired. The project was intended to be part of a larger series of British Rivers, but only the Thames was completed. It follows the River from its source in Gloucestershire to the North Sea, illustrating the scenery and architecture along the way.

Map complete, double folding, one clean split at a center fold with a tape repair, another partial split at a fold. These volumes appear to have been re-bound without the plates, as there are no remaining tabs or page stubs, binding is tight, all edges gilt, very handsome. Large set (Elephant folio, 13" x 17" x 3", 20 lbs.), additional postage required for international orders or priority shipping.
