Unstated edition, indeterminate printing due to the lack of a number line--but because it was purchase in April, 1960, it is most likely a first print. Hardcover in unclipped dustjacket. 16" tall, 11-3/4" wide; 480 numbered pages. This book is a reprint of the volume published in 1895 with, apparently, numerous illustrations added for this edition. Besides battle reports from virtually every major battle, it also includes "A Comprehensive History of the Confederate States Navy", "Monuments Erected to the Confederate Dead", "Confederate Treasury Notes", "Confederate Poems", "Index to Illustrations" and "General Index". This one-owner book (me) is in very fine condition: the exterior is square, very clean, free of edge dings with both upper corners and the lower front corner lightly bumped without fraying; there is slight bumping at the heel of the spine with some color loss but no fraying; hinges are strong; all edges have a 1" wide very slight brownish tint caused by masking tape (more on this in a moment). Except for an inked name/date ("April, 19, 1960")/store name/city on the FFEP, the interior is perfectly clean and completely free of writing and stray marks; the FFEP has several vertical creases and both sets of end pages have that 1" wide browning along the edges. There may be slight browning on several pages from newspaper article that had been stored there, but none that affect reading the text. Not remaindered, ex-library or Book Club edition. The dust jacket is fairly clean and free of fading, with a 1" tear at the bottom edge of the rear panel, two similar tears on the bottom of the front panel and numerous small chips along both upper and lower edges of the jacket; the previously mentioned masking tape, since removed, has caused only a minor change in the coloration of the jacket's edges (see photos); jacket is now protected by mylar jacket. This three-column text is composed of the battle reports written by the commanders.

Boards have significant fading and stains, tears along most extremities, and bumping to fore corners resulting in exposed boards. Textblock has tears along the edges, primarily along the fore edges of the frontispiece to page 10, and from page 467 to the rear free end page (some tears have been archivally repaired, but not all; impacting text on page 7 and 478). Textblock splitting from pages 13-49, 64-81, 130-143, 162-206, 224-290, and 366-415; pages 31, 47, and 273 are detached from the textblock (but present). Light to moderate stains and foxing throughout, and age toning to edges. Contains the original floral end papers laid in, and explanatory notes on glassine interspersed throughout the text.
