1st edition. Anna Comnena is considered to be the first woman historian. This book studies Anna as a personality, with her hopes of succession to her father Alexios, her marriage, self-pity, court life, and her feelings about aristocracy and beauty. As a character in terms of the three theological virtues of faith, hope and charity, and the four cardinal virtues of temperance, fortitude and wisdom, justice, and ideals of other writers. As to her education, and as to her place as a historian and as a writer. Pp.x/558, folding genealogical chart to rear has foxing, owner's name to front free endpaper. Red cloth, gilt title to spine, wear to top and tail of spine. Scarce. G+.** "Anna Komnene/, Ánna Komnen?; 1 December 1083 1153), commonly Latinized as Anna Comnena,] was a Byzantine princess, scholar, physician, hospital administrator, and historian. She was the daughter of the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I and his wife Irene Doukaina. She wrote the Alexiad, an account of her father's reign, which is unique in that it was written by a princess about her father".(wiki).
Hardbound. Red publishers cloth. ix, (1), 558 pp, folding chart at rear. From the dustjacket of a modern reprint of this rare classic: Anna Comnena is the first woman historian. Her magnum opus, the Alexias, is a life of her father, Alexius Comnenus, Emperor at Byzantium from 1081 to 1118, and furnishes the only contemporary Greek account of the First Crusade. Mrs. Buckler's book is a full-length study of Anna's personality and of her value as a writer and historian.' -- From the author's preface: `The Alexias affords an insight not only into the career of the Emperor Alexius I and the public events of his time, but also into the mental outlook of his daughter who wrote it. In publishing this study of her moral and intellectual standards, I wish especially to thank three among the many scholars who have kindly helped me.' -- `In her Preface Anna strikes the key-note of her history. Having been `nurtured and born in the purple' she wishes to hand down to posterity her imperial father's great deeds, `not meet to be delivered over to silence', and in so doing she is only continuing a work begun by her husband, Nicephorus Bryennius Caesar. These two beloved names wake such sad memories that she weeps over their loss and ends her Preface, having introduced into these few pages one quotation from John of Epiphania, one from Polybius, one from Sophocles, two from Euripides, one from ."
