Christopher Hawkins was born in Rhode Island and was apprenticed to a tanner. In 1777, at age 13, Hawkins ran away to become a privateer and fight against the British in the American Revolution. He was captured and later held on the infamous prison ship, the HMS Jersey. This book is a narrative of those adventures and sufferings, offering a fascinating account of the American War for Independence. According to Howes, only 75 copies of this edition were printed. That may be apocryphal, but regardless, first editions of this title are quite scarce. Howes H-319. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 316 pp.
