They form part of a series of lectures on the history of English libraries which have been arranged at intervals in the last few years. No attempt is made to give a complete picture of English libraries in the first half of the nineteenth century, but each of these lectures dwells on an outstanding figure in this period: Dr Oldman writes on Sir Anthony Panizzi and his work for the British Museum; Mr Munford discusses Dr George Birkbeck and his interest in the Mechanics' Institutes; and Mr Nowell-Smith is concerned with Carlyle and the foundation of the London Library. The lectures are printed much as they were delivered." Very Good.

He begins by thanking him for his 'kind congratulations' (on his promotion to at the British Museum, following the retirement of Sir Henry Thomas): 'I have been laid up with a bad cold over Christmas otherwise I should have written before'. Hyman's latest catalogue interested him very much, and he hopes that 'the fact that I don't buy much nowadays will not deter you from sending me future issues. The 1769 second edition of Leopold Mozart's "Violinschule" interested me greatly and I hope it found a worthy purchaser.' From the papers of Leonard Hyman.
