Fine condition black boards, white cloth spine and red spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped photographic dust jacket. Includes Authors' Dedications; Preface and Prologue: The Glory Years. Illustrated with two sections of black-and-white photographic plates. "There are only a handful of things that have genuinely touched me in my life: when I first heard Bix Beiderbecke play his cornet; when I first walked by a painting by Soutine; when I first listened to Opus 28 No. 4 by Chopin; when I first read Tolstoy; when I first saw my wife, Anne Bancroft, on the stage in Miracle Worker - and when Sid Caesar alternately made me laugh and cry while doing his version of Pagliacci on our TV show. It was the thrill of the discovery of true genius." - Mel Brooks. "I worked with Sid Caesar for nine years. I thought I knew him well, and I admired him enormously. But now, after reading his book, I cried - yes, I cried. I now know him as I never did before and I admire him even more." - Carl Reiner. "Sid Caesar is to the history of television comedy what Charlie Chaplin was to film comedy. His revealing autobiography is remarkably frank and moving. Anyone interested in the history of television comedy will find this an absorbing study. But even the general reader will be moved by the heretofore unknown drama of Sid Caesar's personal life." - Steve Allen. "In the fifties, Sid Caesar, one of the funniest men in the world, presided over a group of comic geniuses who dominate the screen and stage today. With the help of friends and colleagues (Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, Carl Reiner, Neil Simon, and Larry Gelbart), Caesar developed original television comedy that rocketed him to stardom in "Your Show of Shows" and "Caesar's Hour." This group's hilarious rap-and-write sessions, many of which are re-created here, produced Caesar's famous Professor Shtick, the unforgettable Swiss-clock routine, the engaging series of duo performances with Imogene Coca, and many other rib-tickling scenarios. These were the "Glory Years." But when "Caesar's Hour" ended in 1958, the nightmare suddenly began. The combination of devastating insecurity and the pressure of success led to a dependence on alcohol and pills that soon became an addiction. Periods of despair alternated with uncontrollable rages and violent behavior; work was sporadic and his family relationships were under tremendous strain. His wife, Florence, rode the roller coaster of depression and manic behavior with his, hoping and believing that it would change. Change did come at rock bottom. When, in 1978, an attempt to revive his act with Imogene Coca fell through, the drinking increased and Sid fled to Canada. A meeting with the right doctor helped him to confront his disease, and a sustained effort to rebuild body and mind began. Previous attempts at classical psychoanalysis had failed, but alone in a Paris hotel room, Caesar developed a unique method of self-analysis to reassemble his being. Today, Caesar is in total possession of a dynamic self and is engaged in exciting new work. This story lays bare the traumatic ups and downs of one of the best in show business. Studded with anecdotes from those who knew him best, it entertains, inspires, and reveals the true Caesar to all his fans." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.
