Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. 1st Edition. Folio. Pictorial title, and 19 (of 25; but with one not listed, making 20) lithographed plates, additionally also FIVE MOUNTED AND IN EXCELLENT CONTEMPORARY HAND COLOURING. Publishers morocco, gutta purcha perished, contents loose and disbound. Text and plates rather foxed. SUBSCRIBERS copy, with a receipt for five guineas four pasted to front endpaper to John le SUEUR, dated 6th July 1847, and signed by the publisher. A FINE ASSOCIATION. Le Sueur was apparently a Jersey admirer of Capelain, attempting to set up a gallery devoted to Capelain after the artist s untimely death in 1848. Also loosely inserted is a mezzotint portrait by Bellin after Lucas of Sir Thomas Le Breton, Bailly of the Island of Jersey, President of the States &c. The contents in more detail are as follows: 1) Lithographed title page, The Queen s Visit to Jersey, September 3rd, 1846. Published by Philip Falle. 2) Dedication to her Majesty. 3) Text leaf (two sides). 4) List of plates (two sides). The lithographed plates are as follows: Arrival of the Royal Squadron; Landing of her most Gracious Majesty; Re-Embarkation of Her Majesty; Departure of her Majesty; Town and Harbour of St Hilliers; Hermitage; Portelet Bay; St Brelades Church; St Brelades Bay; Corbiere Rocks; St Owens Bay; Plemont; Bonne Nuit Harbour; Bouley Bay; Rozel Bay; St Catherine's Bay; Anne Port; Mount Orgeuil 1; Mount Orgeuil 2; Mount Orgeuil 3 (extra view, not listed). The extra hand-coloured plates are as follows: 5. Re-Embarkation of her Majesty. 6. Departure of the Royal Squadron 7. Town and Harbour of St Hilliers. 9. St Aubin s Bay. 20. Rozel Bay. The mounts to the hand-coloured plates are chipped and brittle, as the mount paper has become somewhat acidic. Abbey (Scenery 553) notes that a few subscribers copies were supplied with some hand-coloured images mounted separately, as in this one. Please note that of the basic set of plates (ignoring the hand-coloured ones) there are 19 of the 25 only, plus the extra view of Mount Orgeuil. It is a pity that the remaining six plates are not present from the original set, but one of those missing is represented in the hand-coloured ones (St Aubin s Bay), and there is the extra view of Mount Orgeuil. Please note faults. Priced accordingly. Extra photos sent upon request.

Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A magnificent panorama of Rio de Janeiro [Brazil] Le Capelain, John; Nicolle, Edward; Dickson, James. Panoramic Views of Rio de Janeiro and its surrounding scenery, Lithographed by James Dickson, from paintings by the late Le Capelain the original sketches by Edwd. Nicolle Junr Esqre. N.d. [c.1848]. Liverpool. Baines & Herbert. In oblong folio. Lithograph title & ten tinted lithograph plates. Folio. Publisher's brown pebble-grain cloth, upper cover gilt, slightly rubbed. First edition, sepia issue. A lovely copy of this rare work. Le Capelain produced the ten views here based on original sketches by Nicolle. The ten views are uncaptioned and feature images of the city, Guanabara Bay, Sugarloaf Mountain and the surrounding hills. The son of a Jersey printer, Le Capelain (1812-1848) received most of his training in the family business. His artistic talent came to the notice of many with the publication of his watercolour of Mount Orgueil in Moss's Views of the Channel Islands in 1829. He lived in England for a short while in 1832 and travelled to Scotland and France where he continued to paint. On the visit of Queen Victoria to Jersey, he was commissioned to produce an album of watercolours to comemorate it. The Queen was so delighted with The Queen's Visit to Jersey (1847), she asked him to produce a series of views of the Isle of Wight. Sadly, Le Capelain died of consumption before he was able to complete the commission. Abbey's note is curious, attributing authorship to Le Capelain, who never travelled further than France. Unfortunately, very little is known about Nicolle. Seven copies of this work located on OCLC. Just two copies have appeared at auction in the past 30 years: one in mordern half morocco, the other disbound. Abbey, 710. Borba de Moraes, 226.

A handsome set of three views of Jersey, England.John Le Capelain, later known as Jean, (1812?1848) was a painter often claimed to have been born in Saint Helier, Jersey, the son of Samuel Le Capelain, a printer and lithographer, and Elizabeth Anne Pinckney, his English wife. He was actually born in London and baptised there two days after his parents married there. After returning to his father's native island, he followed his father's trade in lithography but abandoned it later in life. He also learned the art of painting, without any formal training. About 1832 he returned to London and practiced as water-colour painter. His technique gave his paintings a particularly misty and foggy effect. After Queen Victoria's visit to Jersey in 1846, a volume of drawings by Le Capelain of scenery of the island was presented to her as an official souvenir by the States of Jersey. This led to his receiving a commission from the Queen to paint pictures of the Isle of Wight. While engaged on these he developed tuberculosis, of which he died in Jersey in 1848., Image Size : 355x540 (mm), 13.98x21.26 (Inches), Platemark Size : , Paper Size : 454x623 (mm), 17.87x24.53 (Inches), Hand Colored, Lithograph Very Good, two of the prints are backed with acid free tissue paper for long term preservation.

"On a wild sea-beaten rock are the remains of what once was the cell of St Helier, the hermit. This holy man met his death from the hands of a band of Norman pirates, whose ferocity he attempted to rebuke and whose idolatries he denounced; receiving for answer the blow of a battle-axe, he died a martyr. In the Drawing the hermitage and surrounding rocks are shewn at low tide, under the effect of a coming storm." Abbey, Scenery, 554. Tinted lithograph, hand-coloured. Very good condition. A fine view which de Capelain describes as "Surrounded by furze and heather-covered hills, intermingled with grey rock and luxuriant foliage, it charms the eye by its quiet beauty; amongst the woody recesses of its deep dell, light, wreathing smoke betrays the fisherman's dwelling, whose boat on the shore or sailing on the blue breezy sea adds life and interest to the scene. In the Drawing the bay is seen shining in the light of the morning sun." Before its dark, dripping entrance stands a natural obelisk of weather-stained granite, and beyond, through an arch of Nature's turning, is seen the splash of a small but beautiful waterfall, whose music, solitary as the curlew's note, adds to the wildness of the scene."
