Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. Thomas Fraser (1850-1934) was an English seaman who began as a 15 year-old apprentice and retired as a captain. Along the way, he worked on 25 voyages in fast clippers, delivering a wide variety of cargo around the globe. When he retired, he wrote everything down, and proved to be talented at narration and description. His tales of far-off places, mixed with his Victorian outlook, are humorous, charming and very interesting. The English writer Marjory Gee pulled his writings together and the collection was published by Stanford Maritime in 1979. For the US market, Stanford Maritime printed additional copies and they were marketed by Norton, as a US edition, although it's the same book. This is a first printing of the stated First American edition. It is plain burgundy boards with silver lettering on the spine. 217 pages, including photos. The dust jacket is unclipped and has no shelf-wear. Other than one dogear, it is pristine, with no marks in it or on it. …

Its work and numbers grew, and it soon became a full-fledged unit of the Royal Engineers. In the Great War the unit pioneered the use of mobile searchlights, defending ports on its native Tyneside and at Gosport from air and sea attack with searchlight batteries. Units were also engaged on the western front, where, amongst other responsibilities, they supplied water for hard-pressed infantry on the Somme; helped in the tunnelling work that preceded the explosion of a score of gigantic mines at the battle of Messines Ridge.
