Dem Temperament nach ein Melancholiker, war er mit manchen sonderbaren Gaben ausgestattet: Wahrträume, Hellsehen, ein hilfreicher "innerer Glanz" und ein persönlicher Schutzgeist spielen eine nicht geringe Rolle in seinem Schicksal. Schwere Heimsuchungen, Feindschaften, Verfolgungen blieben ihm nicht erspart: der älteste Sohn wird als Mörder seiner eigenen Frau hingerichtet; Cardano selber wird im Alter von der Inquisition eingekerkert und nur unter der Bedingung freigelassen, daß er sich von nun an jeder Lehrtätigkeit und Veröffentlichung enthält. Seine Lebensbeschreibung, die neben der des Benvenuto Cellini die bedeutendste und lesenswürdigste Autobiographie der italienischen Renaissance sein dürfte, hat Cardano nach thematischen Gesichtspunkten angelegt und geordnet; das heißt, er gibt jeweils ein Stichwort und berichtet dann, was dorthin gehört. Dies erlaubt ihm, locker und sprunghaft zu erzählen und sich bisweilen dem Essay im Stile Montaignes zu nähern. September 1576 in Rom), war ein italienischer Arzt, Philosoph und Mathematiker und zählt zu den Renaissance-Humanisten. Gerolamo Cardano gilt als einer der letzten großen Universalgelehrten der Renaissance mit einer erstaunlichen internationalen Bekanntheit zu Lebzeiten, die zu jener Zeit sonst eher bei prominenten Künstlern und Literaten zu beobachten war. Die Vielzahl der Wissensbereiche, die er in Form von Vorlesungen und Schriften bearbeitet hat, reicht über Medizin, Mathematik, Philosophie, vergleichende Religionswissenschaft, Physik, Chemie, Ingenieurwissenschaften, Pharmazie, Psychologie und Traumdeutung, Astronomie und Astrologie bis zur Architektur und Wissenschaftsgeschichte. Bei dieser Fülle kann auch der enorme Umfang seiner Schriften nicht erstaunen. Ein wesentliches Verdienst Cardanos liegt in der Integration des Humanismus der Renaissance und der neuen Ausrichtung der Wissenschaften im 16. Jahrhundert mit dem Schwerpunkt in den Naturwissenschaften. Dazu bedurfte es eines solchen universal gebildeten Gelehrten, der in der Philosophie ebenso ausgewiesen war wie in den Naturwissenschaften.
