Leather Bound. Zustand: Good. Originally published in 1728 it was originally thought that Carleton was a fictitious character, however it is now generally believed (though still contested) to have been a genuine memoir of Defoe's time in the War of the Spanish Succession in Flanders and Spain, during which he was captured and spent some years a prisoner in Spain. xxiii+463pp. Bound in what appear to be original tree-calf leather boards which have been laid into a later leather binding, including an entirely new leather spine with four raised bands, gilt lettering and a black morocco title plate between the 1st and 2nd bands. Boards have been subject to much shelf-wear but are still in good condition with the exception of the corners that have been bumped and rubbed. Text-block is sound and though the title page is heavily foxed there is only occasional foxing to other pages. End papers have been replaced.

The Memoirs of an English Officer, who serv'd in the Dutch War in 1672 to the Peace of Utrecht in 1713 by Capt George Carleton, first edition, second issue, title within double-rule border, woodcut initials and headpieces, a very good, clean copy generally, contemporary calf, gilt, spine gilt in compartments, upper joint cracked but holding firm, spine ends chipped, 8vo, for E Symon, 1728 ffep, title, dedication, 6 p, 352 pp 2 rfep An attractive copy of this work attributed to Defoe The second issue appears to be the scarcer with ESTC listing on 2 copies in the UK (not in BL) This book was published five times, but under different titles (1728 (2-times), 1740 (scarce copy), 1741 and 1743) Some believed the book to have been written by Daniel DeFoe, but that that theory was rebutted by different studies in the 1970s This memoir contains descriptions of "their Cities, Towns & etc" in the following locations: Valencia, Barcelona, Molvidro, Monserat, Madrid, Bilboa, Bayonne, etc .
