Manuskript / Papierantiquität Erstausgabe Signiert
No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Four autograph signed letters to Henry Roland, founder and partner in the noted London gallery Roland, Browse & Delbanco. One dated 1982. From addresses in Barnes and Hove, one also signed from her husband Christopher Mason. Discusses dinner parties and invitations also her work. Joanna Carrington, who has died aged 72, was one of the most distinctive and original painters of her generation. Her talent showed itself early: she was awarded the Queen's scholarship while at the Central School of Art, and had exhibited as one of six young contemporaries at the Institute of Contemporary Art by the time she was 20. Perhaps of almost equal importance was her strength of character, and her determination to realise her talent by relentless hard work and a scrupulous attention to detail.Joanna was born into a Bloomsbury family in Hampstead, north London. Her father was Noel Carrington, who created and designed the Puffin imprint for Allen Lane at Penguin Books; her aunt was the painter Dora Carrington, whose influence was all around her on the walls. But she was not intimidated by the Bloomsbury aura, and sought, from an early age, her own, individual style. In this, she succeeded: her work is considered by many to be far stronger than that of her aunt and other members of the Bloomsbury group. At the outbreak of the second world war, her parents moved to Lambourne, Berkshire, where her father farmed and Joanna grew up with a love of the countryside, living a gymkhana kind of life with her pony, Smokey. Her feelings for landscape and its flora and fauna became vital elements in her paintings. At 17, she attended the summer painting school in Suffolk run by Cedric Morris, who wrote to her mother: "That child of yours is a born painter. I have never had a student who showed so much, I might even say as much, promise." She was sent to Paris to study with the Cubist Fernand Léger, whom, she said, would only admire what you did if your drawings resembled his own. There is no doubt, however, that his insistence on bold drawing and tight composition made its mark. For a time, she lived with her first husband Mick Pilcher, a designer, in Nigeria, where she did little painting. When the couple split up, she came back to London, got a studio in Notting Hill and made up for lost time, holding her first one-woman show at the Establishment Club's gallery in Soho in 1962She taught at the Hornsey and the Byam Shaw schools of art, telling her students firmly that "anyone can paint" and recommending her own method for landscapes - a sketch in pencil with colour notes, followed by the use of her memory at home. Joanna had fine-tuned her visual memory so well that when she had a bowl of fruit or a jug of flowers in front of her, she never took more than one good look at it before concentrating on the canvas without further reference to the original. During this period, she contributed a series of articles on painting to the woman's page of the Times, and these grew into a book, Landscape Painting For Beginners. In 1966, Joanna married the painter, writer and film-maker Christopher Mason, and when, in 1973, he made a film about the primitive painter Alfred Wallis, she decided to reinvent herself as a "primitive", using the pseudonym Reginald Pepper, who went on to produce many delightful and beautifully composed pastoral pictures. Unsurprisingly, Pepper soon developed his own following, selling well at the Portal Gallery, London, and thriving even after Joanna's cover was blown in the Sunday Times in 1981. Such was Pepper's fame by then that he was commissioned to illustrate a story by a cat called Longbody, published as Pepper And Jam (1984). Joanna's sense of humour could also be appreciated in her cartoons for a book written by Andrew McCall, The Ghastly Guest Book (1981).It was not, however, until she and Christopher went to live in France in 1979 that Joanna began a series of landscapes, still lives and glowing interiors, in which, while clearly influence. Signed by Author(s).
