Burgundy leather spine and corners, 5 raised bands and gilt to the spine, spine tips chipped, marbled burgundy, blue and cream boards are detached, gilt edges. Interior first marbled fly has price sticker scar Pre-title frontis has a short tear at bottom gutter, illustrated pre-title, otherwise clean and unmarked, book block strong. Very pretty.; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. THE GREAT CIVIL WAR OF THE TIMES OF CHARLES I AND CROMWELL BY R. CATTERMOLE 1846. I am pleased to offer for your consideration a very good copy of a vintage book rarely found in this condition; it is titled: The Great Civil War of the Times of Charles I and Cromwell by Rev. Richard Cattermole with 29 illustrations by his brother George Cattermole. This large hard cover book (8 ¾ x 11 inches, 279 pages) was published by Fisher, Son & Co. and the Caxton Press of London. This copy is undated, but research suggests that it was published in 1846. The book is very well illustrated, starting with an engraved portrait of Charles I as the Frontispiece and including another twenty-nine highly finished engravings from drawings by the Artist. The book is bound in blind-stamped red cloth with a large gilt decorative motif on the cover and gilt titles and decorations on the spine. The page edges are full gilt and the engravings are tissue-guarded. Condition: This book is in very good condition, especially in comparison with the few and rather expensive examples you find online. The red cloth boards are rubbed and soiled and the spine is darkened from handling. The front gutter is starting to split at the base (about 2 inches) and the top of the spine is ripped and in need of repair. Inside the book is unmarked although one can discern what appears to be some small, erased scribbles. The interior pages are generally clean and bright without toning or foxing except in a few cases adjacent the tissue guard such of the frontispiece which also affects the title page. The front hinge is cracked but the rear is intact, and the binding feels reasonably sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

Front hinge is cracked. previous owners bookplate on front paste down endpaper, otherwise free ofinsciptions. Engraved half-title page and numerous b/w engravings, all complete. Some internal gatherings are loose, though overal contents are clean and complete. Gilt folio edges.

An in-depth historical narrative of the conflict between the Crown and Parliament, detailing the shifting dynamics that led to Oliver Cromwell's rise as Lord Protector and the eventual execution of King Charles I. Includes Vandyke's portrait of Charles I as a frontispiece and an engraved vignette to the half-title page. A further twenty-eight engravings (as called for), each with a tissue guard except for two where the guard is missing. 279pp. Fully leather bound with four raised bands to the spine with a black morocco label with gilt lettering. Boards have detailed blind-impressed and gilt decoration. Gilt to all page edges. Marbled endpapers. 3cm cracks to the heads of the joints, however boards remain fast. Foot of joints are showing signs of cracking, but this has not yet occurred. Shelf-wear to extremities of boards. Light aged soiling to boards. Text-block and pages remain sound and bright, given the age, other than occasional foxing, mainly to the endpapers and to the edges of several of the plates. Cracking between gatherings at p168. Pencil marks and some discolouration to endpapers. Fisher published this work in 1846 and 1855, this is believed to be the 1846 edition.

Both volumes have been rebacked with the original spines laid down. Wear and edge knocks to the boards and remains of the original spines. Inside, bookplate of 'The Hope Trust Edinburgh ion inside covers. Later name & date on ffep. Firmly bound. Text clean, but musty. No extra for 2nd Class within the UK. Please enquire for overseas.

Full-Leather. Zustand: Good -. First Edition. Repair desireable. Back signature and 1st signature [through the title page] iare detached with short tear noted in title page. The body of the book is otherwise fine. The lovely leather binding is detached and nearly seperated at both hinges. Bottom 1 1/2" of spine absent. Restoration of the spine and reattachment of the covers would give great looking book.

The name of a former owner is inked out on his small bookplate on the front pastedown, as is his written name on the front free endpaper. Old repairs to joints, which are starting, a couple nicks to cloth, corners worn. Despite detracting qualities, a well bound first edition of George Cattermole's engravings. Best known for his illustrations in Dickens' The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge, for which he received direction directly from Charles Dickens, George Cattermole collaborated with his brother Richard on historical "annuals," as they were known. They depicted significant chapters in British history, often presenting medieval, chivalric and other romantic themes. This was to be the first of a series, and the book ends noting it's the end of the first volume. Subsequent volumes published by Longman were perhaps abandoned, although the brothers were published by other houses.
