Zustand: very good. 1st Edition. vi, 90pp. Octavo. Original brown cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine and front. Previous owners bookplate on front paste-down endpaper. Eight black and white plates, including frontispiece of author. A clean, crisp textblock. very good Dr. Daniel Caulkins (1824-1905) earned degrees in medicine, law, and theology. He practiced medicine in northwest Ohio at Williams Center and while fever was prevalent in the county in the 1860s, he never lost a patient. He also served in the Mexican-American War, and taught medical courses after the war. He began designing airships in the 1860's and tried to construct a flying machine that ran on gas. Many historians argue that the Wright brothers applied his theories while developing their first attempt at an airplane.

hardcover. Zustand: very good. [Privately printed] Toledo, 1895. Octavo publisher's cloth (a bit rubbed and worn at tips); 90pp, frontispiece portrait and seven plates. Caulkin's address stamp on the front endpaper, probably added to all copies. "A concise description of a new air-ship which the author believes will be the finally accepted plan of successful aerial navigation" and a tantalising foretaste of a promised "large atlas, illustrative of all the parts of the flying ship, and kindred subjects" (preface). That's the book I want. This machine was powered by an electro-magnetic motor that Caulkins, a Toledo MD, had invented in 1865 and had waited some thirty years for the world to be ready for the next step. The mid-nineties seemed the right time, airships were in the air, so to speak. Apparently, in 1896 and 1897, there was a rash of airship sightings similar to the flying saucer boom of the fifties. This flying machine was no bit of frippery, it was massive. "The best constructed air-ships will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and some of them millions. They will be immense palaces with wings". Close inspection of the perspective view will reveal figures on the upper deck to the right of the flagpole. I must say, whether or not it got off the ground, as a bit of architecture it was a century ahead of its time. Caulkins wanted the US to own the patents but at the end comes a diaphanous threat that he would go to foreign governments. He lived another ten years after this book but further developments either evaporated or, like Keely's flying machine, were sequestered and quashed by the military.

8vo, pp. 90; frontispiece portrait and 7 plates; original brown cloth lettered in gilt on spine and upper cover; near fine. "The author, an obscure 70 year-old Ohio physician, identified himself on the title page as "Discoverer of the Circulation of the Nerves and Inventor of the Electro-Magnetic Circular Power". A 1941 WPA Ohio history which called this book "now exceedingly rare" described Dr. Caulkins' work as ignored and forgotten, especially as he had failed to follow it up, as he had promised, with an 'atlas containing complete plans for flying machines'. Still, his far-sighted writing did 'undoubtedly establish him as one of the prophets of aviation' who correctly foresaw the vast future impact of manned flight - on warfare, exploration, global transportation and communication. Although Caulkins wondered 'who will be the first to cover themselves with glory' by inventing the first flying airship, there is no evidence that the Wright brothers, just 150 miles to the south in Dayton, ever read, let alone seriously studied, this curious book" (Pacific Book Auction Galleries).
