Isfahan (Persia) or Deccan (India), 17th-18th century. Very refined drawing in pen and watercolour in various colours and heightened with gold, on paper; in center a kneeling Indian lady, seated against a cushion on a terrace, eating breakfast, behind her a tree, in the background a town; verso blank. 18,4 x 12,3 cm.*Drawing of great refinement. The style of the figure, and the face in particular, is similar to the work of Shaykh Abbasi (flourished in Isfahan between 1650-1684), a Persian Safavid court artist who possibly travelled to India and was employed at Golconda in the Deccan, south India, for many of his later works depict figures in Indian costume and settings. He had a very distinctive style, with delicate colouring and notable European elements, and he set a new style of painting which was to be followed throughout the eighteenth century. - A few tears very neatly repaired.[(2246)].
