El profesor David M. Chalmers se especializó en el estudio de los movimientos sociales de carácter violento. A los ocho años ya participó en una manifestación y a los quince presenció por primera vez unos disturbios raciales. Asistió como observador a disturbios estudiantiles en París, a la agitación de los sijs en Amritsar y las demostraciones de los Zengakuren en Tokio. Asistió durante años a reuniones del Ku Klux Klan, entrevistando a muchos afiliados de esta organización. Su curso sobre «La tradición del americano vigilante» fue el primero que se impartió sobre este tema en una universidad norteamericana. El profesor Chalmers se ha dedicado a la enseñanza en numerosas universidades de los Estados Unidos, fue profesor de la fundación Fullbright en Ceilán y ha dado conferencias organizadas por el Servicio de Información de los Estados Unidos en el Japón y el Vietham. Es autor de libros y artículos sobre temas políticos, historia económica y movimientos sociales. «En este libro asistimos a un análisis concienzudo del nacimiento y resurgimiento del KKK, siempre después de la guerra. Primero fue a partir de 1865, o sea al salir los USA de la Guerra Civil; después, el resurgir del mismo a raíz de la guerra del 14, y en la última etapa, al terminar la II Guerra Mundial. Ya de por sí este criterio selectivo y ordenador debe despertar nuestra consideración hacia esta obra. Es indudable que Chalmers no improvisa, por cuanto acude a la raíz económica del mal. Es decir, que huyendo de la fácil explicación del prejuicio racial, con lo que, queriendo decirlo todo, no se dice nada, el autor bucea en la situación del negro como mano de obra barata y que, por tanto, conviene mantenerlo en la situación de desposeído; de sujeto a la miseria, lo que, en definitiva, le convierte en una reserva de mano de obra de fácil acceso y barata.
