The Signal Corps was commanded by the famed polar explorer Adolphus Greely (1844-1935), who had been appointed to the post by President Grover Cleveland. Under his command, the Signal Corps was vastly expanded, and constructed, operated, and maintained telegraph lines during the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, constructed a line of 4000 miles to Alaska, and proved to be a vital lifeline during the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake & fire in April, 1906.
