There are chapters on heathers, geraniums, camellias, bulbs, succulents, the conservatory, orangery, tropical plants, the orchid house, aquarium, etc with detailed lists of varieties of for each type of greenhouse. Very attractive plates. Sitwell (Great Flower Books) p. 117. Catalogue of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society 196. First printed in 1838, this edition has some corrections and all the plates are included. A picture of this book is available on request.

An attractive and detailed work by a popular garden writer. The printed title page gives the date as 1838, the date of the first edition, while the hand colored title page gives the date as 1839, stating new edition carefully revised. Spine is a little faded. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Lacking the rear endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and clean with the occasional scattered spot. Bound without two plates. Good. book.

Ten hand-coloured plates plus the engraved hand-coloured title (page dated 1845) and other illustrations as listed, contemporary dark half morocco on cloth boards, edges speckled. Printed title page is dated 1844. Occasionally foxing to illustrations, what appear to be splashes to pages 42-43, but overall a nice example of a justifiably famous work covering French, Italian, English and Dutch gardens as well as types of soil, growing from bulbs, and a great variety of plants including roses, in its original binding.
