This book vividly documents the author's travels through Ecuador, delving deep into the complexities of its bustling port city, Guayaquil. From the bustling streets lined with colonial architecture and teeming markets to the serene countryside dotted with sprawling plantations, the author captures the essence of local life. The author provides rich insights into the socio-economic landscape, examining the intricate web of commerce and the challenges faced by the people amid political turmoil and natural disasters. Through detailed observations, the book sheds light on the social customs, traditions, and cultural heritage of the region, offering a valuable glimpse into the heart of Ecuador. Charles Wiener (1851?1913) was an Austrian-French scientist-explorer. Born in Vienna, he is perhaps best known as the explorer who traveled extensively in Peru, climbed the Illimani and came close to re-discovering Machu Picchu. Jules Crevaux (1847?1882) was a French medical doctor, soldier, and explorer. He is known for his multiple explorations into the interior of French Guiana and the Amazon. Claude-Joseph D?sir? Charnay (2 May 1828 ? 24 October 1915) was a French traveler and archaeologist notable both for his explorations of Mexico and Central America, and for the pioneering use of photography to document his discoveries. ?douard Fran?ois Andr? (17 July 1840 ? 25 October 1911) was a French horticulturalist, landscape designer, as well as a leading landscape architect of the late 19th century, famous for designing city parks and public spaces in Lithuania, Liverpool, Monte Carlo and Montevideo. He undertook a botanizing trip in the foothills of the Andes in 1875?76 that resulted in the introduction of numerous hardy and tender plants new to European cultivation; his researches resulted in a volume on bromeliads, Bromeliaceae Andreanae. Description et Histoire des Bromeliac?es r?colt?es dans la Colombie, l'Ecuador et la Venezuela, Librairie Agricole, Paris, 1889. Am?rica Pintoresca: Descripci?n de viajes al Nuevo Continente (1884) is a 19th-century Spanish-language book documenting travels by explorers such as Carlos Wiener, Jules Crevaux, and D?sir? Charnay. Published originally in Barcelona by Montaner y Simon, it features detailed accounts of the geography, cultures, and landscapes of Latin America, enriched with numerous engravings. The work compiles travel narratives focusing on different regions of Latin America. Key contributors include: Carlos Wiener: Travels to the Amazon River and the Andes; Jules Crevaux: Travels from Cayenne to the Andes; D?sir? Charnay: Explorations in Mexico and Central America; and Edouard Andr?: Descriptions of Equinoctial America (Colombia-Ecuador). It serves as a significant historical, pictorial document of the Americas in the late 19th century. Often recognized for its extensive illustrations, it is considered a visual record of 19th-century exploration. It has occasionally been reprinted.
