Hardcover. Zustand: Good. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, faded purple cloth boards blind stamped with gilt to spine. Exterior shows bumps and wear along edges and corners and spine is heavily sunned with edge chips. Small paper label present near bottom of spine. Internal binding is good with only minor hinge pulling. Text pages are tight. The backside of frontispiece shows evidence of a name stamp in green and original owner's name is penciled at the top of the title page. No other markings found other than some smudge marks and stains. Pages are toned due to age and scattered foxing is present. The pages that contain the illustrations are quite brown in the illustration on page 444 has a two inch tear at the top near the hinge area. Good reading copy.

First edition of this exceedingly scarce emblem book written and edited by Presbyterian and Methodist ministers -- an impressive example of Victorian American book production, w/ charming and occasionally macabre & grotesque illustrations of morality, virtue, vice, and more.
