Trade Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Adrian Chesterman (Cover Illustration) (illustrator). Complete & Unabridged Edition. 277 pp. Nearly flawless copy with minimal external wear, crisp pages and clean text. Synopsis: Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who first appeared in publication in 1887. He was the creation of Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based consulting detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess and is renowned for his skillful use of astute observation, deductive reasoning and forensic skills to solve difficult cases. Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that feature Holmes. The first story, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialised novels appeared until 1927. The stories cover a period from around 1880 up to 1907, with a final case in 1914. All but four stories are narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson; two are narrated by Holmes himself, this including the Blanched Soldier, and two others are written in the third person. In two stories (The Musgrave Ritual and The Adventure of the Gloria Scott), Holmes tells Watson the main story from his memories, whereas Watson becomes the narrator of the frame story. Conan Doyle said that the character of Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, for whom Doyle had worked as a clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Like Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing large conclusions from the smallest observations.

Paperback: 7" x 4½". Zustand: Good: Moderate signs of wear. Cover Art: Adrian Chesterman (illustrator). 1995 Edition. © 1994: 2nd in the 'A Land Fit For Heroes' series of books. 1st printing of 1995 edition:- Synopsis: Britannia, 1993. In a world where the Roman Legionaries never left Britain a man can walk from the walls of York - or Eburacum - to the Southern seas without leaving the shade of the greenwood, inhabited by wildcats, wolves and bears, as well as descendants of the folk who built Stonehenge. Solar-powered air cars journey along straight roads that connect the Roman settlements - and link them to the cities of a global empire. When a jealous feud forced three young people into the forest, they discovered an older Britain, where the rules of rational Rome no longer applied. But now their sanctuary has been besieged and they are once more on the run. Their destination this time is Stand Alone Stan, a community built around an ancient standing stone high on the Yorkshire Moors. And it is here that their paths must, at last, diverge, and we begin to suspect the very different destinies that await them:- Review(s): "A superb novel of an alternate world filled with magic, wonder and a haunting sense of place" / "Strange but quite beautiful. Mann has given this book a mythic quality that augers well for the rest of the series" - New Statesman:- (original cost £5.99).

Hardback: 9½" x 6¼". Zustand: Near Fine: Small signs of wear. Cover Art: Adrian Chesterman (illustrator). 1st UK Edition. © 1992: A stand-alone novel by Dan Simmons. 1st UK edition, 1st printing:- Synopsis: All his life, Jeremy Bremen has been cursed with the unwanted ability to read minds. He can hear the thoughts behind the placid expressions of strangers, colleagues and friends: their dreams, their fears, their most secret desires. For years his wife Gail has served as a shield between Jeremy and the world's neurobabble; her presence has protected him from the intrusive thoughts of those around him and allowed him to continue his work as one of the world's leading mathematicians. But now Gail is dying and Jeremy comes face to face with the horror of his own omniscience. Vulnerable and alone, he is exposed to the chaotic flood of others' thoughts, which threatens to fill him with the world's pain and longing, and sweep away his sanity. His mathematical studies have taken him to the threshold of knowledge and enabled him to map uncharted regions of the mind, to recognise the mind itself as a mirror of the universe. But his studies have taught him nothing at all about the loss of love and trust, and about the loneliness of mortality. Now Jeremy is on the run - from his mind, from his past, and from himself - and his treacherous odyssey takes him from a fantasy theme park to the mean streets of an uncaring city, from the lair of a killer to the gaudy casinos of Las Vegas, and at last to a sterile hospital room in search of the voice that is calling him to the secret of existence itself:- Review(s): "A stunning, vividly imagined and thought-provoking novel, 'The Hollow Man' is an unforgettable journey into the heart of mortality, and shows award-winning author Dan Simmons at the height of his extraordinary powers":- (original cost £15.99).
