In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. A copy of the first edition, 1964, as stated. Original gilt-titled red cloth 17x25cm. (8), 153pp + 4 maps on 5 sheets as called for. Covers very good, bumped to the extremities and slightly faded to the top edges and spine. Interiors near fine, lightly creased to the first few corners. Maps fine, neatly folded. No jacket. Major Clarence Mann, who had attended Sheikh Zayed's majlis, wrote this "to fill the void of historical and general knowledge and serve as a basis for future research". He was constrained by the local source material as "the recording of events has usually been neglected on the Arabian Peninsula", and when recalled from memory "embellished and modified so that they usually bear little resemblance to the original incidents". Without accurate British records "it would be almost impossible to recreate the history of the Shaikhdom" (Preface). He includes a description of the land and its tribes, and a history from the creation of a Shaikhdom (1761-1833) up to the present, predicting that there will be "great difficulty contending with the economic, social and political forces that will arise from its sudden wealth from oil" (p1). Appendices include genealogies, a chronology, treaties and agreements. The maps include: I. The Shaikhdom of Abu Dhabi in 2 sections (Al-Dhannah, Al-Buraimi); II. Abu Dhabi Island (showing topography); III. Villages of Buraimi; and IV. Boundary Proposals 1:2,100,000 (with the variously dated claims by Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, British and Saudi proposals, and Anglo-Turkish Conventions.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, of this volume discussing the history and future of the emirate in the aftermath of the discovery of oil. It also contains four maps of the emirate and of historical boundary claims in the region, from the borders drawn by the Anglo-Turkish Convention of 1913 through to the Buraimi dispute. Major Clarence Mann wrote this volume "to fill the void of historical and general knowledge regarding the Arabian Shaikhdom of Abu Dhabi and serve as a basis for future research" (p. iii). The historical narrative follows the development of UAE-British relations using evidence drawn from the records of British administrators. "Its value lies in explaining the milieu of Abu Dhabi (the mounting pace of socio-political change in a Bedouin society as a result of material prosperity brought about by the discovery of oil), and provoking others to undertake similar studies of city states like it" (Srivastava, p. 191). Provenance: Corporal Pat Devlin, Fire Section, Trucial Oman Scouts, with his signature to the front pastedown and a few of his pen notes internally. The scouts was handed over to the UAE in 1971 and became the basis of their armed forces. Devlin's notes update the family tree of the Al Bu Falah Sheikhs to reflect the deposition of Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan Al Nahyan by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1966 (p. 120). Adrian Hanna, Memories of Sharjah, accessible online; R. K. Srivastava, "Review of Abu Dhabi; Birth of an Oil Shaikhdom", India Quarterly, vol. 22, no. 2, 1966. Octavo. Four maps on five sheets in rear pocket as issued, diagrams in text. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, grey endpapers. Cloth sunned in places, spine ends slightly worn, covers marked, light toning to map folds, contents bright: a very good copy.
