Maxwell, fisico scozzese (1831 - 1879), contribuì allo sviluppo della fisica con la teoria del campo elettromagnetico e la prima formulazione statistica della teoria cinetica dei gas. Dal 1871, titolare della nuova cattedra di fisica sperimentale. passò a contatto con M. Faraday e con altri insigni studiosi, le sue memorie principali: sulla teoria dei colori, sulla teoria cinetica dei gas, sulla termodinamica, circa la quale aveva già pubblicato una memoria nel 1859, e sulla teoria dinamica del campo elettromagnetico. Intorno al 1865, M. pose mano alla stesura di una grande opera, A treat ise on electricity and magnetism (pubblicato nel 1873), che era al contempo una summa di tutte le teorie elettriche e magnetiche del tempo e l'esposizione, in forma più matura, della sua nuova teoria del campo elettromagnetico, su cui aveva già cominciato a lavorare dal 1855. Il potere unificante delle sue teorie si spingeva sino a prevedere che le onde della luce fossero dello stesso tipo delle onde elettromagnetiche (teoria elettromagnetica dell'ottica). I suoi contributi alla teoria cinetica aprirono il campo agli sviluppi della meccanica statistica, una componente fondamentale della fisica moderna. Nel 1871, assieme alla nomina a titolare della cattedra di fisica sperimentale, ebbe la direzione del nuovo laboratorio di fisica, il Cavendish Laboratory, che diventerà celebre in seguito con le ricerche sull'elettrone di J.
