Edges toned; shallow stain at bottom margins of first twenty leaves or so; some foxing and toning throughout. University School Pegram Prize presentation bookplate with handwritten inscription to student James A. Kerr dated for June 26, 1871 on front pastedown (presumably for Thomas H. Norwood's University School in Richmond, Virginia; Pegram Prize established in memory of Colonel William Johnson Pegram, 1841-1865, artillery officer in Confederate Army of Northern Virginia serving under General A.P. Hill; James A. Kerr was later an attorney and partner in the Norfolk, Virginia firm of Ellis & Kerr). Also at front pastedown's bottom right corner is a paper bookbinder's ticket for Welch & Co., University Bindery which was located in Cambridge, Massachusetts but is not cited in Spawn and Kinsella's AMERICAN SIGNED BINDINGS THROUGH 1876. Binding is firm. With b/w plates on unpaged leaves including frontispiece retains its tissue guard sheet. Concludes with rear advertising section on unpaged leaves of which five pages are railroad ads and six pages are b/w vignette illustrated publisher ads for Carleton's Works, i.e. other books by Charles Carleton Coffin. Large foldout color map inserted within rear pastedown pocket; map has some toning and several small slender chips and short tears at folds. Documents the author's travels via railroad from Duluth, Minnesota to Portland, Oregon.
