CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Originally a Lieutenant in Battery A, Rhode Island Light Artillery, Monroe was promoted Captain and took command of Battery D about 15 September 1861. During the Antietam campaign he commanded his own battery, and the combined battalion of batteries of the Divisional Artillery, First Division of First Army Corps as the senior officer present. Afterwards, he was promoted to Major on 24 October 1862, and left the Battery. He was assigned the duty of organizing the Artillery Camp of Instruction at Washington, DC and on December 4th, was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. Here he provides interesting and entertaining anecdotes of his years of service. REFERENCE: DORN RI 30.
