The Original Ballet Russe was founded in 1931 by Rene Blum and Wassily de Basil (also known as Colonel W. de Basil). This ballet company was one of the successors of Ballets Russes which had dissolved after Blum and de Basil had parted ways. De Basil then took ownership of the Original Ballet Russe and Blum went on to found his own company, Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Impresario Sol Hurok managed both companies. The company was active until 1947 when it disbanded (there was a brief revival in 1951, but the company closed for the last time in 1952).

Laid in are four loose plates on magazine stock featuring large photographs and biographical sketches of Alicia Markova, Anton Dolin, André Eglevsky, and Lubov Tchernicheva.Ballets this season include Francesca da Rimini, Constantia, Aurora's Wedding, Graduation Ball, Scheherazade, The Firebird, Cain and Abel, Fantastic Symphony, Yara, Le Spectre de la Rose, Mute Wife, Choreartium, Swan Lake, Prince Igor, San Sebastian, and Les Sylphides. Among choreographers, there's Balanchine, Nijinsky, and Massine (among others). Set and costume designs (which are shown here in watercolor) include contributions from Bakst, Derain, Gontcharova, Gris, Miró, Rouault, and de Chirico. Bound in clean light brown cloth with clear gilt titles to front board and spine, this dated 1903 First Thus Edition is VG. Originally printed in 1877 for private circulation, this is the first edition for general circulation, under the Editorship of R.C. Seaton, M.A. X11/218pp+folding map of the field of Waterloo. With portrait frontis of the author, with tissue guard, Introduction, Preface, 12 Chapters and ten additional illustrations. Light foxing to part of final chapter, map at end slightly creased at bottom edge; otherwise all VG.

This 12 ¼"x 9 ¼; the original wrappers are rebound in green hardcover binding with gilttitle "Original Ballet Russe". 1946-1947 Metropolitan Opera House Season and Coast to Coast Tour, presented by S. Hurok, with Director Col. Wassily de Basil; with black and white photograph of the dancers, most of which are signed.~~Founded in 1909 by Sergei Diaghilev, the Ballet Russe became the most influential ballet company of the 20th century by expanding the audience beyond the upper class through ground-breaking collaborations with choreographers, composers, designers, and dancers. By the late 30s the company had been re-formed and re-named to the "Original Ballet Russe" under the directorship of de Basil.~~Nearly the entire cast has autographed their photograph, including famed Osage nation ballerina Marjorie Tallchief. Laid in are three autographed 8" x 10" glossy photos: Tenor Guiseppe di Stefano in 1949, ballerina Cynthia Riseley, and Russian-born dancer Senia Solomonoff in 1912. Di Stefano and Solomonoff inscribed theirs to M. Charpenel, a Mexican-American bookseller to whom the volume also belonged. Altogether, there are 33 autographs, including the laid in photographs.
