Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No dust jacket. Handy Edition. iv, 72, 114, 20 p. [6] pages. 17 cm. Frontis. Highlighting/underlining. Name of previous owner on fep. Cover has wear and soiling. Marks to text and margins/endpaper. This is one of The Students' Series of English Classics. Printing date uncertain but no earlier than 1898 due to Burns copyright notice. It is a fascinating example of how English Literature was taught to American students at the end of the 19th Century and beginning of the 20th Century. Bound in with this are: James Russell Lowell's Vision of Sir Launfal and Other Poems edited by Mabel Caldwell Willard, 114 pages and The Cotter's Saturday Night by Robert Burns, edited by George A. Watrous, 20 pages. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (originally The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere) is the longest major poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, written in 1797-98 and published in 1798 in the first edition of Lyrical Ballads. Along with other poems in Lyrical Ballads, it was a signal shift to modern poetry and the beginning of British Romantic literature. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner relates the experiences of a sailor who has returned from a long sea voyage. The mariner stops a man who is on the way to a wedding ceremony and begins to narrate a story. The wedding-guest's reaction turns from bemusement to impatience to fear to fascination as the mariner's story progresses, as can be seen in the language style: Coleridge uses narrative techniques such as personification and repetition to create a sense of danger, the supernatural, or serenity, depending on the mood in different parts of the poem.Samuel Taylor Coleridge (21 October 1772 - 25 July 1834) was an English poet, literary critic and philosopher who, with his friend William Wordsworth, was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets. He wrote the poems The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan, as well as the major prose work Biographia Literaria. His critical work, especially on Shakespeare, was highly influential, and he helped introduce German idealist philosophy to English-speaking culture. Coleridge coined many familiar words and phrases, including suspension of disbelief. He was a major influence on Emerson and American transcendentalism.Throughout his adult life Coleridge had crippling bouts of anxiety and depression; it has been speculated that he had bipolar disorder, which had not been defined during his lifetime. He was physically unhealthy, which may have stemmed from a bout of rheumatic fever and other childhood illnesses. He was treated for these conditions with laudanum, which fostered a lifelong opium addiction.
