In-4 de 277 pages et 7 pages de partitions. Ière partie: depuis les origines jusqu'à la révolution par L'Abbé Collette . 2ème partie: depuis la Révolution jusqu'à nos jours par l'Abbé Bourdon. En fin d'ouvrage on a placé les deux pièces les plus anciennes connues de maîtres de chapelle de la Cathédrale de Rouen.Très nombreuses illustrations in-texte par Charpentier. Brochage d'origine blanc cassé, couvertures imprimées. L'ouvrage est très complet et fort intéressant car il aborde très largement l'histoire et l'évolution du chant lithurgique en France à travers celles de la Maîtrise de Rouen. On employa de bonne heure des enfants dans les églises pour servir à l'autel mais aussi pour chanter certaines parties de l'office divin. Des écoles épiscopales ont été donc crées pour former les enfants à la connaissance du chant . Ce furent là les premières maîtrises. Il devait exister une école de ce genre à Rouen dès le Vème siècle.
