Boards show significant wear and bumping to leather on corners, significant wear and instances of moderate soiling to marbled paper, and moderate plus wear to edges. Text block has moderate age toning to edges, light to moderate uneven age toning to pages interiorly, and sporadic foxing to pages interiorly. Some chipping to bottom edge and corner of half-title (not impacting text). Instance of worming to fore edges of pp. 113-117. Ink scribbles (18th-century) across text on pages 113 and 135 . Small 4to, 200 x 142 mms., pp. 136, including half-title, old ownership notice loosely inserted, recently rebound in quarter calf, marbled boards, black leather label; text browned, with some water-staining in first 25 leaves, outer margins a bit worn. The first edition of this work appears to have been published in 1676, and there were at least another 38 editions published in the 18th century. Although ESTC records printings in 1758 and 1760, this printing with 1759 in the imprint does not appear.

A conserved copy, with restoration work (mostly marginal) to a number of pages. Final two leaves defective, restoration of margins. Title and prelim page also have conservation work to margins. Restoration to top corner, with some loss at the margin.136 pages. ESTC, T134825. Full title: "with the Extraction of the Square and Cube Roots. Also Rules for finding the Prime, Epact, Moon's Age, Time of High-Water, with Tables for the same. Together with exact tables of the sun's place, Declination, and Right-Ascension. Wide outside margin, but cut close at the top. Pages toned from age. Despite these defects, this copy is still complete and considering the rough life intended for this title, this survivor remains quite a good example. 136 pages. The title page is printed tightly with details of the contents of the book, only some of which is written in the title field above. Title continues to include "exact tables of the sun's place, declination, and right-ascention. fixed stars, large table of difference of latitude and departure. use of sea quadrant, fore-staff and nocturnal, problems in plane sailing and astronomy." and much more. Date at the bottom of the title page is printed as just "178" which is either a misprint or intentionally left unclear so that publishers might write in the year of publication throughout the decade. Half title page is "Stamp's according to Act of Parliament, with three four-penny stamps" and indeed it is, with 3 red rubberstamps dated 1781 (but they are 2-pence stamps, not four-penny stamps). Printed with charts, tables, illustrations, etc. An attractive book and also one rich with portent and sense of use and practical adventure from the era of Revolution, exploration and the eve of the nautical Napoleonic wars. Covers : 2cm split bottom of spine, bump bottom corner, rubs to edges, dark discolouration to front, slight bowing out top corner but essentially complete and original. Contents : two very attractive tiny 2cm duty ? stamps on half title else generally very clean, unmarked and unfoxed. Complete clean and tight copy, VG.

4to. 136 p. Collates A - R4. Modern half calf binding with marbled boards. Spine with a contrasting label. Slight damage to the head of the spine. Half title with three excise stamps and a list of books printed for Mount and Page on the verso. Separate title page for the Table of Difference. Woodcuts and diagrams in the text. Half title and C2 a little frayed on blank margins. Occasional ink stains and fingermarks, but overall in very good condition for a manual which has been used on board ship. The kalendar first appeared in 1676. By the 1730s it had become an annual publication, hence its treatment as an almanac for duty purposes. It continued to be published until the 1780s. Because of its ephemeral nature and its use as a work tool, relatively few copies have survived. This edition is ESTC N34836 with a single copy recorded in Buffalo & Erie County Public Library in the US and no copies recorded in UK. Many of the ESTC records are associated with single locations and many of those copies are in poor condition.
