In 2005 James was appointed to a postdoctoral research position within the School of Electrical Engineering Systems in DIT. Since then he has further developed algorithms in the field of biomedical engineering as well as supervising postgraduate research. He is currently manager of the DIT's bio-potential research facility, where the main focus is the classification of electroencephalograms to facilitate communication by people with degenerative illnesses. He is a founding member of the TeaPOT research group, which focuses on people oriented technologies ( ).
