Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Second 'Edition', slightly retitled (1st ed: Titian: His Life and Times, with Some Account of his Family, Chiefly from New and Unpublished Records, 2 Vols., 1877). The First Edition was identically paginated and there is no new Preface to this Second 'Edition', so it is essentially just a reprint. 'For English readers, the Life and Times of Titian by Crowe and Cavalcaselle (1877) superseded all previous works, such as those of Sir Abraham Hume (1829) and Northcote (1830)' (Classic Encyclopedia Web site). 'As a journalist and native English speaker, Crowe did all of the writing for the books. Cavalcaselle provided a knowledge of art and documents. Their art histories were the first written in English to make use of documentary evidence and research, rather than the hearsay mythology of much of 19th-century art writing. Their books went into numerous editions and are still considered an important part of the literature of art history. The popularity of their books was such that they were issued in German and Italian editions' (Dictionary of Art Historians Web site). '[T]he first major monograph on the artist' (Britannica Online Encyclopaedia).
