The Culwicks write in the Preface, "We have attempted to put before the reader not necessarily an exhaustive study but a balanced picture of the life and outlook of a typical Bantu tribe. The author's drew largely on oral history of the indiginous people and the work examines religion, custom, property, customary law, agriculture, mutual aid, bridal wealth, familiy relationships, medicine men and more.
