Wichtige, stark umstrittene Auflage der ursprünglich, 1872, "von der philosophischen Facultät der Universität Göttingen mit dem ersten Preise der Beneke-Stiftung gekrönte Schrift." Vorliegende (umgearbeitete) Auflage von 1877 löste jedoch eine überaus heftige zeitgenössische öffentliche Debatte um Dühring aus, an deren Ende die Remotion stand. Noch im gleichen Jahr verlor Dühring seine Venia legendi an der Universität Berlin. Ihm wurden u.a. "ironisierende Angriffe gegen Helmholtz zum Vorwurf gemacht" (der Robert Mayer in seiner Abhandlung 'Über die Erhaltung der Kraft' totgeschwiegen habe) (s. Alois Wenzl,1927,71) und "die Göttinger Fakultät erklärte, daß sich ihr Urteil auf die Zusätze der 2. Auflage nicht bezöge" (s. ebda.). Nach dem Remotionsverfahren zog sich Dühring als freier Schriftsteller nach Nowawes bei Berlin zurück. (1887 erschien noch eine dritte, wiederum erweiterte und teilweise umgearbeitete Auflage). - Einbanddeckel leicht berieben. Vereinzelt hauchdünn stockig.
