Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, Spine and strip of front jacket slightly faded, corners slightly rubbed and bruised, not price clipped (£16.99), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy. 224pp, lavishly illustrated. John Lennon (1940-80), was the man who co fronted The Beatles, and whose energy and initial commitment to becoming 'bigger then Elvis' were greatly influential in taking them to the heights of fame. John was a thoughtful, intelligent man, celebrated for his sharp wit and swift put downs. Privately, he was a complex man, a superstar who hated the restrictions of being famous, a singer who disliked the sound of his own voice, a devoted man who was publicly unfaithful. His partnership with Paul McCartney and the other Beatles, changed the parameters of popular music, and his early prose added to the richness of the English language. After the break up of The Beatles, John's relationship with Yoko Ono became one of the great love stories of our times, and with her he developed into both an interesting conceptual artist and an influential campaigner for peace. On the evening of the 8th December 1980, John Lennon, was shot and fatally wounded in the archway of the Dakota Building, his residence in New York. The killer Mark David Chapman, was an American Beatles fan who was jealous and enraged by Lennon's wealthy lifestyle, alongside his 1966 comment that the Beatles were 'more popular than Jesus'. Chapman said he was inspired by the fictional character Holden Caulfield from J. D. Salinger's novel 'The Catcher in the Rye' a 'phony-killer' who loathes hypocrisy. Quite a scarce book. Jacket and photos by The Daily Mail / Associated Newspapers Archive / Getty Images / Cliff Salter / John Dunne (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: New. New condition oversized glossy photographic boards. Includes Introduction: From Actors to Movie Stars; The Oscars: Besty Actor and Best Actress; Index; Picture Credits; and Acknowledgments. Profusely illustrated with both black-and-white and color photographs "from the silent era to the present". "Florence Lawrence can lay claim to being the first movie star. Working for the Biograph studio in the pioneering days of the film industry, Lawrence was hugely popular -- though fans knew her simply as 'The Biography Girl'. When a rival company poached her from Biograph, her new employers hyped up their prize acquisition by sensationally revealing her identity. For the first time, fans of 'the flickers' could put a name to an actor. All the studios soon followed suit, trumpeting their own acting wares and reaping the rewards at the box office. Movie actors were suddenly movie stars. Florence Lawrence didn't enjoy the limelight for long. Her career fizzled out, and she was supplanted by the likes of Chaplin, Pickford, Fairbanks and vValentino, who became the first true screen legends. Using stunning pictures from the Daily Mail archives, many reproduced here for the first time, Movie Stars Unseen Archives features a stellar cast of acting greats, from the stars of the silent era to those taking the honors at the 2005 Oscars." -- from the Introduction. The Daily Mail (photography) (illustrator).

Includes Introduction and Acknowledgments. Profusely illustrated with more than 600 black-and-white and color photographs. "The Royal Family illustrates almost a century of the fascinating history of the House of Windsor, combining historic photographs with stunning contemporary images. As they celebrate the arrival of Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge, this beautifully illustrated edition provides a wonderful tribute to the Royal Family. Charts historic occasions, such as King George V's poignant visit to the battlefields of World War I, the Wallis Simpson scandal that led to the dramatic abdication crisis, the dazzling coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and the moving funeral of Princess Diana, as well as chronicling the close relationship between the monarchy and the British people during the past century. Features momentous occasions in the history of the modern Royals -- such as the stunning wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton and the Jubilee celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's acension to the throne, both events that caught the attention of millions across the globe -- as well as many private family celebrations. From grand state occasions full of pomp and ceremony to scenes of everyday events, the formality of King George V contrasted with the openness of the young Prince William and Prince Harry -- all are aspects of the amazing life of the House of Windsor captured within these pages. Lavishly illustrated with more than 600 superb photographs to provide a charming pictorial record of the many and remarkable achievements of this unique family." -- from the rear outer jacket. 1p., 8vo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Van Thal was 'most distressed to read in the Daily Express this morning that you were no longer connected with that paper.' He thanks him 'for the pleasure that you have given me over a number of years of reading a first class column'. He hopes it will be 'discoverable as to where you are going to continue to write - or have politics put an end to a chapter?' In a postscript he states that he is at least 'able to console myself with Hansard!'.

He is pleased that Stuart is 'coming along on March 15 to talk to the journalism students, and tell them from a practical point of view what they have to expect when they make a start on a good provincial newspaper'. He agrees with Stuart's plan to 'emphasise that Fleet Street is not the only place in the world', his own view being that 'the best traditions of British journalism are still enshrined in the provincial press'. He commends a phrase of Stuart's, adding 'To teach the Young Idea how to do that is my highest job.' He ends in the hope that Stuart will be able to come and 'take luncheon with me in the Common Room' before the talk.

Both items 2pp., 12mo. Both in good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with slight evidence of previous mounting. The first letter (addressed to 'The Editor | Cambridge Daily News') begins: 'When I received my L.L.D Degree from the University (in June 1931) you published in your issue of June 6, some photographs of the procession to the Senate House on that occasion.' He is writing 'on the off chance' that 'original prints' survive, 'as I am most anxious to obtain one, for my Autobiography, if it is in any way possible to do so'. In the second letter (to 'Mr. Stuart') he thanks the editor for the trouble he has taken: 'The photograph is excellent and exactly what I wanted.' He is also 'much amused' by Stuart's 'reminiscence of the Hastings Election (1906, I assume), but shocked to learn (what I had entirely forgotten) that I could ever have spoken against my old friend Freeman Willingdon!' (Fareham was a Conservative, and Willingdon a Liberal.) He recalls that he has stayed with Willingdon 'in India & elsewhere so often since; and was his Sponsor when he took his seat as a "Viscount", in the House of Lords; some 15 years ago.' To prove that there is 'no permanent breach', he is sending a photograph taken when Willingdon 'gave away the Prizes at Cheltenham College - of which I was President'.

1p., 4to. In good condition, lightly aged, laid down on leaf removed from album. Clarke writes that a King's student, also named Clarke, whom Stuart took 'for vacation work', has returned 'full of enthusiasm & gratitude for all you & your people have taught him'. He only hopes that the student 'made as good an impression on you as you have done on him'. He concludes: 'Why don't you come and give the students a talk one day?' According to an official account: 'The University of London ran courses in journalism from around 1923. Study comprised a two-year diploma programme initially available at four participating institutions: University College, Bedford College, the London School of Economics and King's College, and comprising classes in practical journalism, composition, modern history and English Literature. Teaching was concentrated at King's College from 1935 under the directorship of Tom Clarke, former editor of the News chronicle , and teachers included Hugh Todd Naylor Gaitskell, lecturer in Political Economy at University College and the future Chancellor of the Exchequer. The course was suspended on the outbreak of war in September 1939 and never reinstated.' Clarke was also author of "Northcliffe in history. An intimate study of press power".

In good condition, lightly aged, with minor staining from paperclip. An interesting glimpse into the world of Fleet Street 'big salaries' during the war period. He begins: 'My dear Collin Brooks, | A letter such as yours, from a man such as yourself for whom I have so strong a personal, and professional, regard comes as a gleam of blue in a darkish sky.' He proceeds to bemoan his sacking by the Daily Mail: 'Yes, it is a bad business. Six months ago, having had two cracking offers, I asked the Mail people if they were not renewing my contract would they tell me. [] Then ten days ago Prew, the Editor, who is but a mouthpiece for Stanley Bell, sent for me and said just this "Papers are so small. Your work needs Space. You are still our star writer, but as your salary is so big we tell you we cannot renew your contract". Not a word of thanks, of appreciation of my work, no regret . . . just given three weeks notice like a housemaid. It is odd for me to recall that I was told officially a year or so ago that my work had put about 200,000 on the circulation! | Well, there it is. It is not pleasant having £4,000 a year swept away from under one in the middle of a war . . And yet, I have a strange feeling of freedom, of relief from serving people who are utterly inhuman, ungrateful, and who seem to me in their outlook and action to typify all we are fighting Against'. He discusses his agent 'Mr A S Watt', and the 'old offers from Beaverbrook and Kemsley', which 'do not hold good now . . small papers etc'. 'It is some consolation that the Street and the Mail staff appear to think that R [i.e. Rothermere] and Bell have gone mad. He asks if Brooks knows 'Brown of the Amalgamated Press, or could say a word to Beaverbrook, or Kemsley . . or even Robertson of the Express group'. He concludes: 'But big salaries are over, I know . . for the war. But I would be glad of a job in which I could do my damnest [sic] for people who would treat me properly.' The autograph postscript concerns his forthcoming 'War book called "Heroes All" (Hodder & Stoughton)', regarding which 'the Ministry of Information are keen [] specially for America'. After the war Knox returned to the Daily Mail, and remained there until 1955. Such was Knox's celebrithy that his name, according to Patridge, was used as rhyming slang for 'pox'.

6pp., 4to, numbered 4-9. Carbon copies on six leaves. In fair condition, on aged and creased paper. The account does not appear to have been published, and indeed could not have been published during wartime. It may be that it was written for an editor at the Daily Express, but the extent of revision and emendation suggests that it was written with an eye to publication after the war. The first page, numbered 4, begins, after an eight-line deleted passage: 'Reynold's second-in-command is Major Mc.Cormack, a whimsical, helpful little Northern Irishman with strong Evangelical views. He & the four Chief Press Officers, handled me amiably enough; none individually seems responsible for the rows & inconveniences which occur daily. Then there are the Conducting Officers - hearty, convivial cavalrymen who wouldn't profess to know much about any periodical but the Field & Country Life. One of them said to me the other night, "Hickey . . . . ? Oh yes, I've read your stuff. You do cats in the Sunday Times, don't you?" Research established that he was referring to Nat Gubbins in the Sunday Express. Some of the reporters find this Bullingdon manner a little overwhelming; others say that they are useful on the job, since they are on Christian-name terms with the OC of every unit visited.' At the foot of the first page he begins his description of how 'The King's visit brought the rows & inconveniences to a climax. | To begin with, elaborate arrangements had been made to keep all news of it secret till after he had returned to England. On the day the King sailed for France, it was decided in London to release the news at once, after all. But the first that PR in France knew of this decision was hours after the King's arrival, when someone happened to be listening in & heard the news on the BBC.' | Then the censorship fell into its most jittery mood. We were allowed to say that the news had been left secret till the King's arrival (which was obvious). We were not allowed to say that the release came as a surprise to us in France: any hint that deprartmental co-ordination is not 100% perfect is regarded (wrongly, I think) as dangerous. | We were not allowed to quote even such amusing details as the pseudonyms by which, for secrecy, the King had been spoken of beforehand: even among ourselves we had to day "When Mr Harris arrives . . ."; some of the PR staff called him "Mr Big."' He addresses the reader: 'You have heard already of the curious fool arrangement by which glimpses of the King were rationed among the reporters.' He explains that the official description of the 'conference on the day the King lunched with Lebrun & Daladier' was 'not even accurate. There had been no exchange of toasts. There had been only one toast: the King, as host, had drunk the President of the Republic's health. The reporter put this in his story; found later, to his fury, that a censor had struck it out, writing in instead the smug "Cordial toasts were exchanged".' He discusses the role of the censors. The last page (numbered 9) concludes: 'Our reporters are annoyed by all this nonsense & tiresomeness; but its effect on the Americans is likely to be serious. [.] Red tape presented at least one glowingly pro-British news-agency story of the King's visit from appearing in 1,500 newspapers, mostly in America. The agency man was away that day. He asked another accredited war reporter to cover the story for him.' From the Driberg papers. See Image.
