Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. Carmen Fulford (Illustrations) and Johnny Chauvin (illustrator). The format is approximately 5.5 inches by 8,75 inches. 112 pages. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page. The inscription reads: "Judy, It's great here - isn't it? Daisy Karam-Read 11/3/07". Daisy Karam-Read graduated from Queens College in New York with a bachelor's degree in Communication Arts and worked as an actress for several years in New York, Los Angeles, and Munich. In January 2002, she graduated from Tulane University with a master's degree in Cultural Management, with an emphasis on art history. It s not enough to approach relocation with an open mind. You have to have an open heart, says Daisy Karam-Read, the New Yorker who moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and fell in love with the region and its people. The author shares her observations of life in the Magnolia State and demonstrates a deepening understanding of its culture. After losing her home in Hurricane Katrina, which she describes in her book, Karam-Read vowed she'd never return to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. But Mississippi's magic lured her back, and after months away, she returned to the people she loved and the area that had undergone so much devastation. The Deep South had become a permanent part of her, and the thought of leaving the Coast no longer felt like an acceptable option. These stories are perceptive essays celebrating a resilient, irrepressibly joyous society. Encompassing everything from small town southern weekends to domestic arts, the author approaches her subject with respect and appreciation and has clearly absorbed the South's psyche and succumbed to its charm. When Daisy left the razzle-dazzle of New York City to move to Mississippi, she took a huge leap of faith. Daisy Karam-Read, an urbanite to the core, thrived on Manhattan's fast tempo and glamour, and never anticipated living in a sleepy southern town. Marriage to the southern gentleman of her dreams brought her abruptly to Mississippi, casting this international travel-loving Yankee into a complex culture unlike anything she had ever known. Could all the negative remarks, bad jokes, and insensitive comments Karem-Read had heard about the South -and Mississippi in particular- be true? Daisy takes the reader on an emotional and intellectual journey while uncovering many truths about an often misunderstood region. Her entertaining essays are a must-read for southerners and Yankees alike, perhaps an eye-opener for all Americans. From a local newspaper review found on-line: "Delightful, charming, and a quick and easy read" are all words being used to describe Daisy Karam-Read's book From Manhattan to Mississippi: A New Yorker Falls in Love with the South. While the book is all of these things, this autobiography of sorts, is also Read's poetic ode to living in the South, and Mississippi, from an outsiders point of view. The book highlights all the reasons why the south is a great place to call home. "This book is my Valentine to Mississippi," said Read. Culture shock is the term most commonly used to describe the experience of moving from a big city, to pretty much anywhere below the Mason-Dixon line. Adaptation to your environs depends on whether you are glass half full, or a glass half empty personality. The same could be said of moving in the other direction, but, at least for Read, her glass half full adjustment to Mississippi was so overwhelming, she has dedicated her book to the experience. Originally Austrian born, Read hails from Salzburg, a city of culture, Mozart, and festivals a German speaking town with Italian Baroque architecture. At the age of six, Read moved from Austria to the states, and spent her formative years growing up in Manhattan. In 1982, she moved with her family to L.A. Back in New York, Daisy earned bachelor's degree in Communication Arts, from Queens College, and spent her young adult life traveling between New York, Los Angeles, and Munich working as an actress. The bi-coastal life afforded Read the opportunity to meet lots of people, but when she met Barbara and Jimmie Lewis, her life took a dramatic turn. These two friends introduced her to the man who would eventually become her husband. Her journey from the north to the south, and her new life in Mississippi is cleverly outlined in the book. Read's imagery and accurate portrayal of the places, people, food and mannerisms, all come together to make this book inventive and sweet. She manages to capture the essence of the differences between the divide without being condescending to either lifestyle. While Read did experience some hardships, like so many others following the storm, she did not want to write another book about Katrina. Yes, there is a very, very short chapter on her experience post Katrina, but Read says, "I wanted to create a positive, uplifting book. This is not a Katrina book." From Manhattan to Mississippi has already earned Read tremendous success. It has been on the best sellers list five times, and was nominated for a SIBA award from the Southern Independence Book Sellers Alliance. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing.
