Le vaste corpus oral rassemblé par l'auteur et enregistré sur bandes magnétiques sert de base à une étude consacrée essentiellement à la face phonique de la langue ( phonétque, phonologie, morphologie)à la fois sous l'angle de son fonctionnement actuel et sous celui de sa genèse. Le phonétisme corse est d'abord présenté et analysé dans ses traits les plus caractérisques à l'aide d'un certain nombre de documents (sonagrammes, palatogrammes.) Puis se trouve mise en évidence son organisation en systèmes et ses modalités de fonctionnement, la dèmonstration s'appuyant sur une masse foisonnante d'exemles et de matérieux inédits. La répartition des divers types dialectaux dans l'espace corse fait l'objet de représentations cartographiques multiples. L'analyse diachronique tente de cerner les phases successives du développement du phonétisme en rapport avec les grandes mutations romanes et de préciser la place de la Corse dans l'aire italo-romane, en évaluant le poids de la parenté génétique et celui de l'Interférence due au contact. Après un examen détaillé des travaux linguistques consacrés à la Corse, l'auteur prend ses distances par rapport à ces derniers sur bien des points: lénition consonantique, nasalisation, genèse du vocalisme., et surtout met en évidence l'existence d'une aire linguistique originale (aire taravaise).
