Stapled Binding. Zustand: Very Good. Ink gift note on front wrapper. 1994 Stapled Binding. 23 pp. Illustrated with black-and-white maps and photographs. "One of the deadliest accidents* in our area's history took place exactly 100 years ago today. 29 people were killed and 62 injured when a Lehigh Valley Railroad train derailed about 20 miles east of Rochester. According to investigators at the time, it was a defective rail on a 400 foot bridge in Manchester, NY that shattered into seventeen pieces and sent at least 3 of the cars into Canandaigua Outlet. Newspaper reports described the scene as a "twisted and splintered mass of wreckage." "Train No. 4, east-bound, left Buffalo, N. Y. at 10:35 A. M., 40 minutes late. It consisted of twelve cars, and was hauled by engines Nos. 2476 and 1804. At Rochester Junctionexternal link, a station 20 miles west of the point of accident, two additional cars were picked up, so that at the time of the accident there were fourteen cars in the train, in the following order: One express car, one mail car, one baggage car, four coaches, Pullman sleeper Austin, dining car, two coaches, parlor car Emelyn, and two coaches. On approaching the west end of Manchester Yard, train No. 4 found the signals at caution, and, being required by rule not to exceed a speed of twenty-five miles per hour through this yard, the speed was reduced accordingly. On arriving at the east end of the yard, all of the blocks being clear, the enginemen of both engines began to use steam in order to increase the speed of the train, so that at the time of the accident the train was probably not exceeding a speed of about 25 miles per hour." "The train was derailed by a broken rail, 247 feet west of a steel girder deck bridge spanning Canandaigua Outlet, causing the death of 27 passsengers and 1 employee, and injuries to 59 passengers and 4 employees. One of the injured passengers died afterwards, making a total of 29 persons killed and 62 injured." "The two engines and the first five cars were not derailed. Grand Trunk coach No. 2187, the sixth car in the train, had one truck derailed, while all of the following cars were derailed. The Pullman sleeping car Austin was leaning over to the right; the dining car was down the embankment on its side, just east of the bridge; Lehigh Valley coach No. 237, the 10th car in the train, was resting on its side in the bed of the Outlet, 40 feet below; Lehigh Valley coach No. 293, the 11th car, was standing on one end in the bed of the Outlet, the rear end of it extending about 15 feet above the top of the bridge and resting against the corner of the parlor car Emelyn, which remained on the bridge. The majority of the fatalities were in coaches Nos. 237 and 293, both of which were of wooden construction." - Rochester Subway.…

"In 1916, to the shock of the scientific community and the world at large, a Florida geologist discovered human remains mixed with the bones of prehistoric animals in a Vero Beach canal and proclaimed that humans had lived in North America since the Ice Age. These new findings by Elias Sellards flew in the face of prevailing wisdom, which held that humans first came to the continent only 6,000 years ago. His claim was snubbed by the top scientists of his day, he was laughed out of the state, Vero's fame declined, and the skull Sellards found -- famously known as "Vero Man" -- was lost. An Ice Age Mystery tells the story of Sellards's exciting find and the controversy it sparked. In the years that followed, other archaeological discoveries and the rise of radiocarbon dating established that humans DID arrive in North America earlier than previously thought. The skull, however, was never recovered, and many people began to wonder: What exactly had Sellards found at Vero? And what else might be buried there? One hundred years after the first Vero discovery, construction plans threatened to cover up the legendary dig site, and a band of citizens and archaeologists protested. Excavations were reopened. Archaeologists uncovered 14,000-year-old burnt mammal bones and charcoal, signs of a human presence, and found further evidence that indicated a continuous human occupation of the site for several thousand years. Prior to the latest excavations an etching on a bone possibly 13,000 years old was discovered that could be the oldest piece of art in America. Sellards had been right all along. Many questions still remain. Who were these people? Where did they come from? And how did they get here? This book draws readers into the past, present, and future of one of the most historic discoveries in American archaeology." -- from the inner front jacket flap. "A fascinating recounting of the early discovery of a Paleolithic human and the issues that were engendered by various opposing scientific views of the validity of the discovery and its analysis." -- Dennis Stanford, author. "Since the site's discovery long ago, the complete story of the Old Vero Site has never been told. This is an informative and entertaining account of this remarkable site and its history in American archaeology." -- Thomas D. Dillehay, author. "Johnson has thoroughly investigated, and transformed into a very readable narrative, an entire century of accumulated knowledge about the research, controversy, and curiousity surrounding the Old Vero archaeological site." -- Barbara A. Purdy, author. "An engaging account of the first Paleoindian site discovered in eastern North America." -- Robert S. Carr, author. "Johnson skillfully weaves a tale of prehistoric life in Florida with the 100-year search to understand that long lost world at the Vero Site." -- Andy Hemmings, Florida Atlantic University.
