Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 210pp., xii. Stated: "First published in 1956", with no number line or printings cited. Foreword by Cuthbert Coventry; Appendix A: The Roman Decree on the Matter and Form of Sacred Orders, pp. 194-197; Appendix B: [Original Latin of the Papal Decree, p. 198; Appendix C: The Meaning of sacrifice, pp. 199-200; Appendix D: The Grammar of St. Matthew 16.18, pp. 201-203; Appendix E: The Claim Made by Pius IX, p. 204; Appendix F: The "Form of Submission" to the Pope, p. 205; Index, pp. 207-210; Councils To Which Reference Has Been Made, p. 210. FROM THE FOREWORD: "One day, some years ago, I remarked to Canon Dart that it was high time that the people of this country recognized that the Church of England is the Catholic Church of this land, and that a book should be written to emphasize this point: the book has now been written (p. ix). FROM THE INTRODUCTION: "This book is not anti-anybody or anything. It is not written to attack the faith, or the customs, of men who are not members of the Church of England. It is pro-Church of England. It is my most sincere belief that the Church of England is the Catholic Church in my country. Although I detest the chaos which exists within it at the present moment, I still believe that it holds the secret which must inspire the Catholic Church of the future. The problem which faces us is how to combine authority and order with liberty. It is a shockingly difficult thing to do. Much of the Catholic Church has given up the task as impossible. Rome certainly has, and what a wonderful unity she has achieved. But at what a cost! Not only has freedom of expression been destroyed, but freedom of thought also. Whenever the Sovereign Pontiff issues an important decree it is not lawful to oppose it "even secretly" in the heart. The democratic method of persuasion through argument--which after all was the method pursued by the Universal Church in the days of the Great Councils--can never hope to achieve the "tidiness" of an autocracy. But it is the true method for men who are free and not slaves." p.xi). No jacket. Black cloth with bright gilt on spine; top edge stained Bible edition red, but has superficial water stains, result in mirror image, jagged, red bleeding onto inside rear cover and verso rear flyleaf (NO more than 1/2" down) and 14 other pages (of 210pp total in book) with barely any bleeding at all (NO impingement on printed text); previous owner name hand-stamped on inside front cover, that of Bradford B. Locke, Jr. (1924-2007), once member and librarian of the Virginia Glee Club (originally sponsored by the University of Virginia, before becoming an independent organization), else Fine: Secure binding; sharp corners; NO rubbing wear.
