Synopsis of The Luger Pistol (Pistole Parabellum): Its History and Development from 1893-1945 by Fred A. Datig The book traces the origins of the Luger pistol to Georg Luger's redesign of the Borchardt C‑93, creating a more compact, efficient toggle‑locked semi‑automatic handgun. Datig follows the pistol's early development in the late 1890s, including the introduction of the first production model, the Modell 1900 Parabellum, manufactured by Deutsche Waffen‑ und Munitionsfabriken (DWM). He details the pistol's rapid adoption by major military forces, beginning with the Swiss Army in 1900, the Imperial German Navy in 1906, and the German Army in 1908. The narrative explores how the Luger evolved into multiple variants—such as the Marinepistole 1904 and the Pistole 08—each tailored to specific military needs. Datig emphasizes the pistol's engineering innovations, including its toggle‑locked short‑recoil action and its use of the 7.65×21mm and later 9×19mm Parabellum cartridges. The book documents the Luger's widespread use across global conflicts from the Boxer Rebellion through World War I and World War II, cementing its reputation as one of the most recognizable sidearms of the era. Datig also examines its production history, noting the involvement of multiple manufacturers—DWM, Erfurt, Mauser, Simson, Vickers, and Bern—over its decades of service. He describes how wartime demands and technological shifts influenced changes in materials, machining, and design refinements throughout its lifespan. The book highlights the pistol's eventual decline as newer designs like the Walther P38 replaced it in German service during World War II. Ultimately, Datig presents the Luger as both a technical milestone and a cultural icon—its distinctive silhouette, engineering complexity, and extensive combat history securing its place in firearms heritage.…
