Er ontstonden daarnaast particuliere initiatieven om het militaire bewind een halt toe te roepen. Vijftig jaar na dato is het Bob de Graaff gelukt de beoogde interventiepogingen in kaart te brengen. Dankzij een unieke toegang tot de archieven van de Militaire Inlichtingen- en Veiligheidsdienst (MIVD) kreeg hij ook boven tafel waarom er uiteindelijk niet werd ingegrepen. Doorslaggevend hierbij waren de verschillen van opvatting tussen de regeringen in Washington en Den Haag, het gebrek aan eensgezindheid bij de Nederlandse regeringspartijen en uiteenlopende visies van de betrokken ministeries. In Coups, contracoups en constitutie geeft Bob de Graaff een nieuwe kijk op het Nederlands beleid ten aanzien van Suriname na 1975, inclusief de bemoeienissen met het Junglecommando van Ronnie Brunswijk en de pogingen om Bouterse veroordeeld te krijgen wegens zijn betrokkenheid bij drugshandel.
