Por ello, los poetas más destacados del Setecientos trataron creencias y actitudes sobre la sexualidad tradicionalmente monopolizadas por la Iglesia católica. Para la comprensión más plena hoy de los poemas que transmiten la nueva mentalidad necesitamos conocer los contextos filosóficos, religiosos y sociales en los que se situaban, áreas que se abordan en los primeros capítulos de este libro. La Iglesia católica se opuso a las nuevas creencias sobre la sexualidad por medio de escritos doctrinales y de las actuaciones de la Inquisición, cuyos archivos revelan la persecución padecida por los que abrazaron un pensamiento sexual más libre y leyeron textos importados que lo iluminaban; la documentación que sobrevive nos informa sobre los libros condenados y las opiniones de los censores inquisitoriales. No obstante, la historia social española de la época da fe de un comportamiento sexual más osado, particularmente entre la nobleza. La tercera parte de «La musa juguetona y divertida» se dedica a interpretar los principales poemarios eróticos y algunas composiciones aisladas. Primero se estudian el «Arte de putear» de Nicolás Moratín y los cuentos «alegres» de Félix María de Samaniego, y, a continuación, composiciones sueltas de Tomás de Iriarte y del mismo Moratín, un poema anónimo, y los «Cuentos picantes» de Tomás Hermenegildo de las Torres.
