Original Green Cloth Hardback. Zustand: Very Good Plus. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good -. First Edition Thus. 1965. xxx, 317pp. From the 'Oxford English Novels' series. Includes introduction by Samuel Holt Monk, bibliography, chronology and notes. Green cloth hardback with gilt titles to spine, in excellent condition wit…h no inscriptions. The priceclipped dust jacket shows toning to the spine and wear to edges. "Colonel Jack, it may be readily granted, is a flawed masterpiece. It has never been so popular as Crusoe, nor so acceptable to modern readers as is Moll Flanders. None the less, in the light of recent studies on Defoe's life and thought, studies which have brought us to the verge of being able to get free of Victorian clichés and to re-evaluate the achievements of this important eighteenth-century writer, it is clear that Colonel Jack is the least ambiguous of all Defoe's novels. It expresses through the characters and their actions the wide range of its author's interests and ideas. Defoe could not have been aware that he had written at once a tale of adventure, a primitive Bildungsroman, and a fable that em-bodies many of his ideas on human nature and society. In this edition Professor Monk has based his text on that of the rare first edition of 1722 in the Huntington Library. Professor of English in the University of Minnesota, Samuel Holt Monk is best known for his work on eighteenth-century criticism, Theories of the Sublime, but has contributed much to studies of Dryden, Temple, and Swift.".
